is there a vacuum or something that can pickup food, ditritus, algae, etc, filter it and then return it?
Canister filter.

or Siphon to filter socks in your sump

or Power-head in your filter sock plugged into a smart app, so you can turn it on and off easy.

On my smaller tanks, I just use a hose to filter sock in the sump method. I wish there were something like that for the large tank as the sump is in the basement. Sometimes, you just want to clean a bit, or are low on water.

I have thought of how to DIY one, but the hard part is finding a pump that will not actually be involved directly.

OH, did not read your replies yet. Best thing is to do a run the water through a fine sock into bucket and pour back into the tank maybe?

Canister filter will do that. Throw in a sand sifter like a pistol shrimp and he'll throw all the crap that gets trapped in the sand into the water column to get sucked into the filter.

I use a gravel vac in the sump to get the sludge. I run the water thru my socks. The one I have isn't on amazon anymore. it has a low profile head, where as some have the motor down that low.

Thats a true statement. I use Marineland internal canister with Diatomaceous earth for a fine filter if needed. works for when i frag leathers in the tank and need extra carbon.

I've never used it, but I'm sure someone on here has one and can provide some real life experience.

Gravel vacuum with a filter sock placed at the end of the hose in the bucket. Filter the water then pour it back in.
