Yes to white LED to grow macro. In LED lights, white is composed of red, green & blue. Maximum photosynthesis occurs in the red spectrum and the blue spectrum. When I see horticulture grow lights, I see red:blue ratio at 4:1.

I build them 4:1 660nm red:445-455nm blue

Easy, cheap and grows things like crazy.

Now, for a reactor, I use the led grow strips on a roll. Amazing chaeto growth!

I don’t think I can recommend this light because of small diodes. In air, many small diodes are acceptable but small diodes don’t penetrate water well. I would recommend 3W diodes to penetrate water.

If you want to increase photosynthesis, then cram many led watts into the refugium. If you want to maximize photosynthesis with those watts, then focus on red & blue spectrum in the ratio of 4:1.

Unfortunately, I can't find the pics. How about I build one this weekend and send it to you?

PM and let me know how much room I have to work with and your address.

It's Christmas so don't say no. :D

Woow that is so kind of you Thank you so much, but i am from UAE Dubai. Unfortunately not possible for now. Appreciate your help.

Use as many white led W as possible. 5000 kelvin is the color of a Caribbean day at noon during the summertime. It has all spectrum and is more than sufficient to grow corals are macro. The reason that many hobbiest have focused on blue is because of the thought that nuisance algae was promoted by lower energy spectrum like yellow & green. All spectrum promote photosynthesis, with the most active transfer peaks at red & blue spectrum.

If you are interested in the science, this link will help. In my display, I like something between 6500K - 10,000 kelvin because of the yellow & red fish that pop under those colors. The contrast is vivid. To me, blue washes those colors out.

That's true. In this case, however, we are targeting macro algae specifically and don't need any real visual enjoyment of the specimens.

So, if we target 660nm mainly with 445-455nm blue thrown in, we cover the main spectrums to promote nutrient uptake by macro algae.

For year people have used 5500-6500K lights for macro and done well. The switch to the above spectrum from that is nothing short of explosive.

I couldn't believe the difference in my chaeto reactor before the teardown. It was probably a 400-500% increase in growth and I used less light to do it.

Unless you like to dabble with “do it yourself” build, I recommend PAR 38 lamps using water proof rubber boot. If you can shop on Amazon, I can hook you up with stuff off the shelf.

I have one and it worked pretty well. It's on a shelf in the laundry room now.

I am just the kind that can't leave well enough alone and love to DIY.
