I'm doing an experiment... I have two 15gal AIO nano tanks both with three chambers in the back, intake/filtration/output as is typical. I'm interested in putting a long thin LED bulb about 12" or so on 24/7 in the intake chamber (instead of a filter sock which I have removed). This chamber is about 3"x3"x 14" deep and wanted to get chedo or even hair algae growing in there. Has anyone tried this? There is nothing but biological filtration in the tank and everything is doing really well but, I want to out compete the slow hair algae growth in the display side so I don't have to manually remove it once a month, but I also would like to maintain the phosphates since my coral appreciate them. I notice that as the hair algae grows in, my Duncans don't open up each day and aren't growing like they usually do after a manual harvest of hair algae. I don't want to knock out phosphates completely, which I feel the hair algae suck up ravenously. I like this solution because I feel like it would be an easy compartment to clean out, or pull the bulb out and strip it of whatever is growing on it on in the chamber. I imagine pulling the bulk of the algae out and reducing to about 1/10 and putting the rest back in to continue growing, keeping only a small bunch in there to out grow the display hair algae. I have yet to get a rabbit fish and would like to see if this works. I have urchins, turbo snails, and a few other things in the tank but nothing is controlling the growth so that I don't have to manually harvest it. Open to ideas and thoughts on the "algae scrubber".
