Spelling and Grammar...

Anyone else cringe at the sight of misspelled words, incorrect words (ie there vs their vs they're), butchered sayings and terrible grammar? I'm far from a wordsmith, math is my thing by preference and by trade, but I at least try and proofread everything I write before I send it/publish it/post it.

I see it on R2R, Facebook, LinkedIn, emails, etc. It is one thing to use slang or shorthand in a casual conversation and I'm just as guilty as anyone for typos that are actually words that I glance past, but what we're coming to is just unbelievable. I'm in my 30's and I know for a fact the people who are my age and older didn't grow up relying on spell check, so that can't be it. Even people I went to school with who got a quality education are guilty of it.

I think I'm going to turn off spellcheck when my daughter is old enough to use a computer.

Am I alone here?

No, unfortunately you are not. I also cringe....my kinds always ask why I insist on using punctuation on text messages.....because it drives me insane if I don't lol. I go back and read everything I type to make sure everything makes sense and is spelled correctly. (I just read this post again....how sad would that be if I misspelled something lol??)

i can live with the grammar errors of misuse of words i am a firm believer in what s i hayakawa taught that as long as the meaning is understood that is all that counts but what drives me absolutely crazy are those who have no idea where the shift key is to capitalize and can't seem to find the punctuation keys to put in commas and periods in most cases i wont even bother to read these posts and simply go on to the next

I have never been good at spelling and grammar.
I struggled all my life with this. Just part of who I am.
Here on R2R I never let it get to me because I understand how hard it can be for people.

It only bothers me when it's written to look proper. But honestly sometimes I use the voice recognition on my phone and it does mess up here and there but it's whatever. Lol

Funny timing stumbling on this thread. I just read a post, in a different thread, that went on for five lines of type (mind you, I'm viewing this on a 24" monitor) without a single comma or period and little to no capitalization. My first thought was "Hey...how about a period or two".

I used to cringe, until I conformed. This shouldn't be viewed as literature, but instead as written conversation, which is different in this social media world of ours. When you are talking to someone, either face to face or on the phone, your words are only half of the exchange. Pitch, emphasis, pauses, laughing, we use all these things to express ourselves. I'm very animated and had trouble at first trying to find a way to express that with text. I even said in a conversation on here last week "if that sounds grumpy, I don't mean it to be". I'm working on my Masters, I know how to write a paper, but this isn't that, you know what I mean? I want you to read me exactly how I would say it, not what is grammatically correct. So, we put commas where they don't "belong" and you'll see me using "...." a lot to try to convey how I'm talking.

I suppose I'm less bothered by lack of punctuation than I am by using the wrong word.

I totally understand and feel where you're coming from, however I blame smartphones and texting. I just read an article the other day, stating that text messages with proper grammar, specifically proper punctuation appear to be less sincere.
It's just as @Lionfish Lair said, this isn't a paper or "written word", so much as it is a typed conversation. I still try to use periods and some proper grammar/punctuation, but dont stress on everything, especially apostrophes and capitals. I do think that using commas and periods makes sense and should continue to be used, even if not in the "appropriate" fashion. LOL

for someone like me, that english its my second lenguage, it really gets complicated haha
but i try to do my best writing the best i can.

sometimes i write "ill" instead of "i'll or i will" or "isnt" instead of "isn't" or "youre" instead of you're"
but ill try to get better hahaha

but in general, i hate terrible grammar in spanish. so i know your feel!
