Hey Everyone,
currently working on setting up an Innovative Marine 30L and since it's going in our living room wife wanted the below stand,, Weight wise is this a good option? just worried whether it's made to hold all the weight.. Has anyone used something similar not really made for an aquarium? Thank you!!

Looks a lot better built than my old Marineland black particle board stand that had a 90 gallon on it for 20 years. The key is to have the floor surface perfectly flat, and the top of the cabinet perfectly flat, which may require you to shim the bottom feet, to avoid sagging or flexing. Consider getting a very thin yoga mat and cutting it to fit for the top of the cabinet. Walmart carries some real cheap ones and they work great underneath a tank. But it must be one of the very, very thin ones. You don't want to use one of those thick workout mats that will put pressure on the bottom of the tank's glass. Been using them for years. Or Bulk Reef Supply sells sheets of neopreme rubber to do the same thing.

Innovative marine sells mats specifically for there tanks but every one I have ever bought has come with the pad already applied on the bottom.:)

Definately agree that the key is a level and flat stand. It will distribute the weight evenly which can be more important with a stand that has legs. And obviously it provides the least amount of extra stress on the tank seams themselves.

You are a new member on here and folks generally like to give positive advice and be kind instead of being objective, imo. Not me, I'm considering the weight of your tank and the flow of water that will occur when/if it fails, and I cannot readily affirm the weight load that the furniture in the picture can hold. It's built to resemble a sturdy piece of classic furniture but how much mdf does it have in it? How well is it assembled, screws or staples?

It looks nice and will probably hold up but it's kind of hard to guess how sturdy it is from a picture. The proof is in the pudding, so set it up and if it fails I'm certain your wife will take full credit since she selected it! :) (I know mine would.)

I worked in the freight industry years ago, and we had a jump test to decide if a crate or large box was sturdy enough to hold up going down the road with other freight loaded on top, or not. If there is a furniture showroom where you can see this piece of furniture I'd recommend you take a trip there and just lean on this item, or go ahead and jump on it and see how it holds up.

Otherwise, it's just a guess since it wasn't designed specifically for a stand. If your wife really likes it, take the picture to a woodworker and have them make one that can hold weight and sheer during earth movement. Hope this helps. I know my wife would want me to warn you but not discourage you, so there it is.

I agree with @KrisReef, the only real way to know is to subject it to the weight it will hold (Approx 275 pounds). It does say in the description that it is a console table so it must be designed to hold atleast some weight of entertainment equipment and DVDs/Blurays etc.

If it was me, I would give it a go, at the minimum it looks like the frame itself is solid wood which is promising. But in saying that, I have the tools to strengthen furniture when needed and I realize not everyone has the ability to do so.

@Gusto do you have the ability to look at the stand in person atall?

Also, Welcome to R2R! And this wonderful hobby, the Nuvo 30 is an awesome tank to get your feet wet with. Are you going with the AIO or the EXT line?

Hi Everyone, Thank you for all the suggestions and honest answers!! The 30L did come with the mat. I'm going to call the manufacturer and see if it's on display anywhere.

If you can get in touch with the manufacturer then you can also ask about how much it will support. You said that it is a 30 liter tank (I think a previous poster calculated the weight based on 30 gallons) so the water weight is 66 pounds plus the weight of the tank and aquascaping. I would use 100 pounds as a estimate for determining whether or not the piece of furniture will support the tank. Based on the picture and solid wood description it appears that it will support the weight, but if you can get feedback from the manufacturer or take a look at the furniture to see how it is built then that is a better approach. Not that it has anything to do with how well it would potentially support a tank, but it is a nice looking piece of furniture! Good luck!

Edit: As pointed out in the thread below, the tank is a 30 gallon (not liter) and the filled weight is 250+ pounds.

The Innovative Marine 30L as mentioned in the OP is a 30 Gallon tank. The L stands for Long (as they do make a 30 Gallon cube as well) so it will indeed fall in the 250-300 pound mark;)

@JoshH - thank you for the correction - I apologize for confusing the thread.

As suggested, based on a 30 gallon tank I would use 300 pounds as an estimate to determine whether or not the furniture will support the tank.

No worries atall, I did extensive research on Innovative Marines when I was first getting into the hobby and own 2 of them right now so it makes it a little easier to distinguish between all the different models which I'll admit is getting harder now they are coming out with new ones every few months it seems lol

I contemplated putting my RSR Max Nano on an ice-box, but didn’t because it is on caster wheels (which are made out of carved wood because it’s 160 years old probably).

If it is made with solid wood, I am willing to bet it would be fine. What are the legs constructed as, Solid? Tapered? Hopefully not on wheels!

It also may be a pain to have it that high up

Edit. Pine and MDF. I would say “no”

Don't forget that the weight of a LED TV and other AV equipment like a receiver, cable box and Blu-ray player etc. will not come close to the weight of a tank. I would want to see it in person.

Did anyone else here have the 36” Sony Vega? Those were the days..... nobody liked helping me move that thing.

No but I still have a Pioneer Elite Kuro Plasma Pro-111FD in my living room that is still considered one of the very best flat screen panels of all time with the blackest blacks you could everyone imagine! It weighs 74 pounds without the stand. ;)
