My Dad started playing trumpet when he was a kid (back in the mid-40's). That was his hobby. He practiced five hours a day. FIVE HOURS! Yes, he was a great player, but he let it get in the way of his schooling so bad he had to repeat the eight grade! Still, my Grandparents let him play and move forward with this thing he loved. Mom and Dad were the same with me. Although I didn't practice quite that much, music DID get in the way of school with me as well, as I spent hours upon hours with my horn on a daily basis. Mom and Dad were still cool with it, though. So I passed that belief system to my children, NEVER getting in the way of their hobbies and providing every opportunity for them. If it got in the way of other things, so be it.

Which is why I WAS SO ANGRY when I started reading this thread! Roped me in but good! 100%. Mainly cause, back in my day, I actually watched parents do stuff like this.
Yeah that was my initial reaction too based off my childhood but I was like yeah no way this is real. I have to say I didnt much appreciate this “April fools” thing, didnt find it funny really but I get it kids will be kids!

I agree. This thread was triggering to me, too.

When I was young, my parents used to threaten to get rid of my pet birds when I didn’t pray…

This thread hit too close to home. :(

Yeah, was in ill taste if you ask me. My dad always was threatening my childhood dog. He is a good kid but took this one too far

Yeah, but kids do that. I know I pushed the limits 50-odd years back. We were ALL jokers back in the day. I kept some of that over the decades but backed off bigtime over the past 15 years. LOL, going through parenthood myself really brought me down to Earth! Now that I'm in my 60's I just don't have the energy for tomfoolery! Did I just use that word? Wow. Just turned into my Grandpa!

Oh for sure! 100% not trying to dog on the kid, I do like the kid! Just felt I needed to acknowledge those on the thread who it had adverse effects on. 🙂

All good! Not mad at all

How Stewy's Dad disciplines his son is none of our business. His Dad doesn't have to articulate his reasons.

How many members here, who have children, would be okay with perfect strangers calling their parenting strategy "dumb"?

Completely uncalled for.

What breed was your dog if I may ask?
And sorry about it
Oh he was a carien terrier. Got him in 4th grade. Looked like Toto from wizard of oz! I named him Todo because we here in Colorado never pronounce the “T” for some reason (example water is pronounced wader) so I named him Todo cause thats how we all pronounce his name over here! He was a good boy 🙂
