Hi R2R,
My large perc (assumed female) has recently become very aggressive to my younger male. She bullied another one so bad (bit fins) that I had to give him back to LFS, but she has been nice to this newer one up until about a week ago. I bought this new male when he was a very small juvenile about 1.5 years ago, and the female was already fully grown. These two had been cohabitating fine up until a week or so ago, but not properly pair bonded yet. 30G display with 10G refugium. Within the past week the female has been keeping the male cornered to under the overflow, lunging at him, and he was doing the waggle dance. I thought all fine, part of the bonding process. But today I get home and the male is behind the overflow box (sandwiched next to glass). Female is stalking him nearly every moment and wants to get in/keep him there. Today he came out to feed, and then went back behind overflow. He is still not injured in any way.
I assume if this goes on, he could die of stress, or they may work it out on their own. I may put him/her into my mesh breeder box if he shows signs of major fatigue, stops eating, or she injures him. Wonder if you all have any other suggestions on what I can do, and why this happened all of the sudden. Seems like he came of age and now she is initiating bonding? Or maybe she is rejecting him?
