hi all. I have a 55 gallon fowlr tank that’s been running quite well for a year now. I would really like to put a sump in the basement which would be ~15 feet down.

I don’t know where to start with my overflow and return set up to make sure I don’t flood or dry out my tank. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

Welcome to reef2reef! Look into panworld/blue line, Iwaki pressure rated pumps.

Overflow is questionable as most standard 55 gallons may be tempered glass, so drilling may be out of the question. HOB overflow may be the only way to go.

Welcome to R2R

Definitely check for temper, this will demon your overflow situation. Make a large enough sump with extra space for the extra water that will be left in the piping, check valves are great but they will fail (not a maybe). Use siphon breaks on your return lines to prevent too much siphoning during an outage or maintenance. You'll need a pressure rated pump as stated before and you may as well oversize for future tank growth because let's be honest it does happen and if it doesn't upstairs you can always grow in the basement.

So:
1. Temper
2. Pressure rates Pump (usually not cheap)
3. Siphon breaks are your friend.
4. Oversized sump with extra volume for backflow
