Sump or canister

Hi everyone...
I have a 190lt fresh water
A 140lt and a 600lt salt water.

I have recently purchased a 750lt and 950lt tank.
Im think africans and natives what is better a sump or a big canister

When in doubt, always go with sump.

Having done both, definitely a sump. Canister doesn’t really do what a sump can do for saltwater. It’s a lot more maintainence and a lot less room (none) for equipment, media and biofilter.

A canister is cheaper. A sump setup as a wet/dry is easier to maintain. I find canisters cumbersome to, clean, change media. Also if the pump breaks need to replace all of it.

sump for sure. Canisters can be used but better in my experience for freshwater.

I don't even know why they still sell canisters. They're nasty and labor intensive to clean. People don't like doing it so it doesn't get done often, and poo just collects in them and rots.

Are we talking about the freshwater or saltwater tanks btw? I suggest sumps for both but different setup on them.

I've had both. I went with a canister on my 40B mixed reef and a sump on my Reefer 425. The sump is much better. It's easier to maintain, add skimmer or reactors, have a fuge. The canister wasn't bad, just not a fan of cleaning it out weekly. I still have my 40B and if I start another tank, I'm 100% modifying for a sump.

When I was first starting off I bought a canister for my 75g, but after researching a bit I went with the sump instead, glad I did.
The canister wasn't a total loss. I removed a UV from my set up 2 months after installing it due to space under the stand. Last year when I got Dinos I set up the UV to run temporarily with the canister filter. About a month later the Dinos where gone and I broke down the UV/canister set up and put it away. If need be, I can have it set up in minutes.

I have sumps on my salt water but i have never done large fresh water tanks

I use both on my 320g together with a big skimmer, I clean the canister every couple months without a problem.

Are u using the cannister as a replacement for a return pump

The big fish FW guys still love them. There's a lot of options but once you get into big fish, people tend to still love them. Not 100% sure why.. I'm guessing they have some obscure and esoteric function that other filtration types can't manage.

For SW tanks less than 55g they still serve a purpose because you can really compartmentalize components. FW tanks they are viable for larger tanks but still tend to be nitrate factories. I would say if you are doing FW larger than 150-200 gallon use a sump. For SW larger than 55g use a sump. Either way you have to do the maintenance on them or they can really do you wrong.

Though it is unsightly. Then again this is the trailer trash of reef tanks so I guess it’s fitting. I just need some pink flamingo lawn ornaments to finish it out :p

Nope......... I have a stand alone return pump.
