hello,

I’ve been doing some reading on refugiums in the sump and I’ve become sold on their benefits. Currently I have a sump with skimmer and I’ve packed a bunch of live rock in it for the benificial bacteria.

I’m wondering if I’d be better off removing the rock and adding some algae and a refugium light such as the kessil h160.

Please chime in with your thoughts/advice! Thanks in advance!

You don’t necessarily have to remove the rock if you have room for it. Chaeto can be beneficial, but sometimes too much so. I have to dose P04 and Nitrates and trim back my Chaeto constantly because it becomes too effective.

I doubt I have room for both the rock and the algae, which would be better?

I’m also having issues with Cyanobacteria in recent months yet my nitrate measure very low

Would adding a redugium help with Cyano?

The macros will take up the excess co2 , plus some no3 Po4

Less rock will have less room for bacteria so will process less no3.

So, it’s worth trying. IMO.

Growing something to use up the nutrients will help with your cyano. It takes a while but should work. Coral is prob the slowest to out compete. Algae is a lot faster
