does switching my (dc) pumps off and on have a big impact on the longevity of the pump? I use this function a lot with feeding etc.

I think depends on a number of variables - the brand of the pump, the number of times daily you're stopping it, etc. I would try to contact the company that you bought the pump from. (Or post the name here). Curious - why are you shutting down your pump with feeding - and 2 - most pumps are designed to 'handle' this.

Following becuase on have 3 dc returns running and I turn them off several times a day. I'm not sure why turning them on and off would cause excessive wear but I'm a gas engine guy with no experience working on electric motors.

EDIT : I turn mine off when I feed because I broadcast feed my tanks and like to have the food blowing around the tank vs going down the overflow.

Nice! I just emailed the company and will keep u informed

Generally speaking, any return pump is better of remaining on consistently rather than being fully stopped and started. That being said, it should not shorten the lifespan of the pump. In lieu of turning the pump on and off we do have a "Feed Mode" scene in Mobius that can temporarily slow your return and flow pumps during feedings to make it easier for fish and corals to consume their food. Below is a video about using scenes.
