Hello! I have a new Orange Shoulder Tang in my 55 QT. It just started what looks like flashing the bottom of the tank today (bottom isn't covered or painted). It is on Day 7 of copper (2.20 w/ Hanna), has had one round of GC and the 2nd dose of Metro last night. I don't see anything on it's body at all and would prefer to not stress it out with a FW dip if I don't have to.

Could this just be a case of it being a tough guy with the reflection? What's the odds of flukes making it this far into the QT procedure?

Thanks!

It could be the reflection, but fluke control usually takes two treatments, sometimes three. Just curious - why dose metro when the GC has that in it already?

I've went by the metro, gc, metro, metro, gc every two days along with the 30 days of copper power.

Am I doing something incorrectly?

A little follow up to this thread. Tang has stopped flashing the bottom glass. I put the 2nd dose of GC in last night. Came home to it looking like this. Is the blackish spot in the body middle where a fluke may have exited? Also, what could be the issue on its lateral line (sorry I dont know what that part is called).

Thanks!

So, flukes are really small, and don’t really leave visible holes like that. Not sure what the spot is though.

My wife said that it looked like a "small wart" last night but I didnt notice it.
I don’t suppose you can get a clearer picture? I just can’t quite see it clearly...

Just double checking, there isn’t another tang in with is there? Want to rule out it being a wound....

I have a pyramid butterfly that is slightly bigger and a 2.5" at most whitetail bristletooth. It's a 55 gallon QT

That isn’t the cause then....never the easy answer, sigh.

It zooms in and out of the pvc but I'd expect a slash type cut. Ie looks like hungry hungry hippos during food times. Do the small raised bumps on that lateral line have any indicators?

The bumps on the lateral line are odd. Head and lateral line erosion isn’t common in this species, and usually starts at the head, not farther back like this. I think you should just observe for now since you’ve treated with prazi multiple times.

Hmmm, there are some rarer issues like semi-parasitic copepods that act as micro predators that can cause lesions like that, but I have never seen them in a quarantine tank before, only old established tanks.
Another option would be a formalin dip (or less effective, but easier freshwater dip). Flukes just don’t burrow in the skin. Some nematodes do, but they are rare, and I would have thought the prazi would have taken care of them.
I suppose this could be a primary bacterial infection, but I’ve never seen that so localized.

So would a ruby reef rally dip work and then use the trifecta antibiotics after the last metro dose tonight?

I don’t think so - ruby reef is really low dose, designed to not hurt most invertebrates - but it also won’t affect larger parasites. Like I said, I don’t think this is a primary bacterial infection, but if it is, then yes, the antibiotics would help.

Try a 150 ppm formalin dose for 30 to 45 minutes with good aeration. Do not use buffered formalin. A FW dip might also work, and a lot easier to deal with.
