My boyfriend and I just purchased an 8ft, 450G and I've been doing some research on what tangs we will want to put in there (after it is all cycled of course). I've heard that you shouldn't combine the same species of tang but I see a lot of people that do. With a 450G does aggression not matter as much? What is the trick to getting a couple of the same species in the tank?

With that size tank you have a ton of options!

I would do a small school of yellow tangs for sure. Then I would add several of my favorites.

PS. You better post pics and a tank build! LOL!

Oh we definitely will be posting lots of pictures! We pick up on Friday and are so excited. We are upgrading from a 75G reef.

So, in a 450G could you put a clown tang and a powder blue in if you put them in at the same time?

Yes on the clown and powder blue.....but be warned those particular tangs are really hard to keep for a long time. It has been my experience that you can add different tangs at different times to the same system as long as they have different body shapes. I agree with the earlier post when saying that a bunch of yellows should be added together, or a bunch of hippos at the same time, or a bunch of purples. Always IMHO.

+1, always add them in groups. The new guy always gets picked on, if you add a small purple tang to a school of larger ones, he could get hurt or killed. In a 450 gallon tank, you will be just fine with groups of different species.
