Tang selection

I currently have a 5ft mixed reef 180. Right now it only has 1 hippo tang but tomorrow I will be starting to quarantine a chocolate tang and a tomini tang. My question is would I be pushing it too much to add a purple tang.

No and add the purple last. Chocalate very docile

Add and enjoy the purple at the same time you add the others. Use the mirror trick to help keep them preoccupied on their own image.

My wife is now wanting to get an orange shoulder instead of the tomini. How will he do with a hippo, chocolate and a purple?

I have a 5ft 133 and currently have a scopas tang, blue striped bristletooth, and a bluespine unicornfish (will be giving him to someone soon because needs much bigger tank, but hes only 2 inches right now), and im looking to get a chocolate tang too. All my others get along pretty well together and they are kind of similar to your list, so I would think they would be good together.

I don't like the mimic (chocolate) with an orange shoulder in a 5' 180.

In my experience, tangs need at least 6‘ of horizontal space to thrive in the long run. Especially if you are going to add multiple tangs. I’ve tried with less and it just hasn’t work. But if you must I would go with your original list and leave the purple and orange shoulder out. Perhaps add a fox face instead. Good luck.
