Tang stocking list

I am currently renovating my reef which I neglected for several years. I currently have 3 fish in my 150 gallon tank. Oscellaris clown, blue damsel, and a recently added foxface. Dimensions of the tank are 52 x 26 x 26.

I’d like to put some tangs to work, and am think of the following fish to be added in this order.

Kole yellow eye tang
Sailfin desjardini tang
Purple tang
Powder blue tang

Are these fish appropriate for this size reef tank? Is the order of addition ok? I’ve been out of the hobby for several years, and would appreciate opinions on good vendors to purchase these fish from.

Sailfins get giant, really really fast so I might rethink one of them in a tank that’s just over 4 feet long.

Powder blues can get very aggressive without a ton of space so maybe think about it a little bit more.

For a tank that size a white tail might be really great.

I have 16 tangs in my 200 & 500g tanks… all doing great… but I’ll never again have a powder Blue!

Thank you, didn’t realize the desjardini got so large.. I did think a powder blue was risky..

I think this is much more reasonable. Purples can be mean so try to introduce him last and as a juvenile. A potential alternative (though they are expensive) is a gem tang instead of a purple. They tend to be much less temperamental.

Are the tangs the last fish you’re planning or do you want more? This will entirely change what will/won’t work.

Yes, I would like to add more, but not sure exactly what. Maybe midas blenny, flame hawkfish, six line wrasse, couple of pj cardinals, and couple of blue green chromis.

Also, I do like most of the wrasses, but my tank has neither sand or a cover, not sure if there any that will fit in?

Fairy and flasher wrasses tend to be just fine in sand less tanks BUT you can always add a small container with sand and the sand dwelling wrasses will find it and sleep in it. That said, you definitely need a top unless you’re willing to risk a floor surfing event which is never fun.

IME, multiple cardinals and chromis usually end up as singles.
I have/had many, many wrasses, but I’ll never have another 6 line!

We have an African Midas Blennie, which is a darker orange variety, and he has a lot of personality and a cool color. He’s my wife’s favorite. They need a hole to hang out and sleep. We also have 4 Vanderbilt Chromis which I would recommend. They have a nice blue color with yellow tails. They don’t school but they do hang out in the same area. I had heard that they are more peaceful and my experience is they are and I haven’t lost any.

If you havnt got these tangs yet, my two cents:

Yellow eye and white tail tangs are very very close. I wouldnt get both in this size tank. Maybe consider a chocolate tang? Also I think two zebrasomas in that tank size is asking for problems. I would do either the purple or yellow if it was me unless you can get them close to the same size and add at the same time

I often keep Purple and Yellow together. They normally doing well together. Both are such beautiful fishes. Get them small and you should be fine. Consider a Convict rather than a Kole Tang, but it is difficult to get a Convict establish.

I haven’t made any purchases yet… I’m moving very slow and making sure I don’t make decisions I’ll regret.

Actually I am open to any combination of fish that would be suitable for my system. I am looking to get the herbivores established to assist in avoiding algae challenges I have struggled with in the past. After the fox face, I assume a “tang gang” is what is commonly used for this, hence the title of the post. If anyone has suggestions for which possible combinations of fish would be useful in this regard I would be appreciative of any suggestions.

Also… I’ve drooled over some of the really cool looking and more rare species, like the chevron and gem tangs, and I can afford them, but my confidence is not high as far as being able to keep them long term.

Tangs are pretty hardy, just gotta watch ich. But if you want to start with a good algae tang bristletooths are cool! I just got a white tail in today and she is very beautiful. Less expensive sub for a cheveron tang for sure. NY Aquatic has them on sale for 120 right now which is an amazing deal. I do use them for algae, but I get them more for personality and color! A purple tang is less expensive than a gem, but can be nasty. NY has them for 75 right now and the one I got today was also very healthy!

Where will you get the Yellow Tang?

I haven’t gotten that far yet, trying to nail down the best fish to stock, I have read good things about dr. reefs, but if there better options available I am open to anything

There are a lot better websites, reef beauties, saltwaterfish.com, violet aquarium ect
