The secret is... Are you ready?.......The secret is..... Never quarantine anything unless you can do it in a tank as large as your main tank. And while you are quarantining, (which I would not do anyway) feed the fish live or fresh frozen foods, not just commercially available foods.

That is the entire secret in a nutshell. The total mystery is solved. We shall never again have a sick fish. Nothing, no ich, black ich, velvet, crushed velvet, dropsy, internal worms, flukes, flounders, or the heartbreak of psorisis.

. you could try searching for Christine via Facebook (that is if you remembered her last name). We found a lot of old friends from way back eg. elementary & high school buddies. Mind you the old friend(s) would definitely look very different and almost unrecognizable

I can barely remember her first name much less her last. I doubt she ever told me anyway. I also can barely use facebook and only go on one site there which is a Veteran Fish site. I am almost the only one who posts there so they should cal it ghost book.

That girl in Sydney would be in her 70s now but I do have a picture of her someplace. She was 24 then and I now her dad was a famous pathology Dr..
She may have moved to Bayone New Jersey by now.

I asked her why there were so many girls there and almost no men. She told me that all the men went off to the US or Europe to find jobs or were in the Army. The girls had almost nothing to do so they enjoyed when the American GIs went there. I certainly loved it there. She took me out every night, showed me how to dive, took me on a great boat ride, took me snorkling and bought me civilian clothes.
She just wanted to have fun so we went dancing and partying.
The first place she took me was a party boat docked outside the Sydney Opera house which was under constuction. You got unlimited drinks and steaks for $25.00 (which was still a lot in 1970) but not too bad.
I didn't have much money because you don't use real money in Nam and credit cards were not invented yet. My hotel room was barely big enough for the cot it had in it. :D

Actually, I just remembered her last name. On to Facebook. :p

Hey Paul, I know that I'm going way out on a limb here and may be mobbed, but I'd like to bring this thread back to fish. Specifically, pipefish.

Now that I'm retired, I decided that I needed to set up another aquarium to keep me busy (along with searching for supermodels/regular models/or just a woman who could put up with me). I think that I'd like to make it a dedicated pipefish tank and was wondering what type you would recommend in terms of hardiness, and ability to get along in pairs, etc.

Thanks, Jerry

Paul ... my wife and myself have discovered & rekindled with so many old, old friends through other old friends via Facebook and I know a whole lotta of the younger generations think Facebook are for old farts (like me). But it's a great way to hook up with old buddies :D

Jerry that is easy. Bluestripe pipefish are by far the easiest pipefish, relatively easy to tell pairs apart and they basically can take care of themselves as long as they are in a tank with some age on it as they hunt pods. I do supplement their diet every day with new born brine but they will also eat tiny pieces of anything meaty, especially clams. They spawn constantly.

I also like dragon faced pipefish which also hunt pods but need supplemental feedings of new born shrimp. Turn off the pumps when you feed them and they will go to the surface and suck them all off the surface.

Next I like Janss Pipefish and they are the nicest looking. They look like bright orangs javelins and will live on frozen mysis but not much else. I have to feed them on one side of the tank and feed everything else on the other side. But they are pretty hardy. Remember males of same species of any pipefish won't get along and will kill each other but you can have a bunch of females.
My male Janss recently bit my male bluestripe and he died in a few days as he kept chasing him and they are totally different species and the bluestripe is less than half it's size.

The more common striped pipefish are much harder to keep and need much more feeding. The ones with the stripes closer together are a little easier, but not much.

These pipes are a little easier than the ones with the stripes a little farther apart. But not much

This one has the wider bands,

This little white one was cool, but it hid all the time and I never figured what it was.

The dragon faced guys are my favorite for personality.

Hows that for pipefish!

These guys are local New York pipefish, very common.

You can see the bite mark in the center of the bluestripe that the Janss inflicted. It is almost healed here but he kept it up.

Janss here behind the feeder.

Bluestripes at feeder.

You can see the Janss, blue stripes and dragon faces here eating shrimp

Is that enough pipefish info? I love pipefish

Sea MunnKey, we still have many of our friends from highschool and my wife still has a large crowd from grammar school.
We are a very big group of people that have been very good friends for decades.
Our closest friends bought the Condo next to us. They live most of the year in Key Largo. But right now I can't fit in any more time for new friends. :D

Absolutely! Thanks Paul. I plan on setting the tank up with rock and mulm and stuff from the sump of my other tank. That should help it along in the maturation process. I also hatch BBS every day. Do pipefish eat blackworms?

Do pipefish eat blackworms?

No, for some reason I have never seen any pipefish eat any worms. I wish they did. Bluestripes will try anything (not worms) but their mouth is so small they fight with their food but can't get it down.

Guess it’s a different situation in my case as majority of our elementary & high school old buddies have mostly resided in Borneo & other parts of the world ;) I’m the only one who’s into this hobby but never was interested in it back when I was there in Borneo ... Internet wasn’t invented & always thought cooking salt was just fine for saltwater tank ...

One of the most amazing sights I have ever seen in one of my tanks occurred with a pair of dragon or snake pipefish as well call them in the UK. This was not so long ago I guess around 25 years back. At the time I had a 130 gallon tank and had a number of pairs of fish including a pair of pygmy angels neon gobbies, a pair of snake pipefish a pair of skunk clowns along with a trio of common clowns 2 of which constantly spawned. Now any fish that got close to the clown's eggs would be dispatched by them in no uncertain terms. However, one evening while watching the tank I observed one of the pipefish slowly approach the clown's eggs and one by one proceeded to pull off a number of eggs and devour them until after it had around 8 it had had its fill and swam off. The clowns obviously extremely annoyed by this shaking their bodies and tail at the pipefish did not get too close or attack it. The clowns were obviously afraid of the pipefish maybe thinking it was some kind of ... .well. sea snake. I never saw this amazing sight it happen again.

This is a pic of the tank with me with hair that is not grey then.

This is a picture of my tank when I had more hair than you. My hair didn't stay long enough to turn gray  1971

Thats because your shoulders were up near your ears.

I just got out of the Army in that picture. The next year I had hair growing out of everywhere.
