Today we had a tank I purchased delivered and setup by the LFS. We have pictures of the tank when we purchased it to show the chip below was not present when we bought it. I sent before and after pictures to the shop and am waiting to hear back from them, but in the mean time I want to know how worried I should be. It is right on the edge of the tank and is probably at least a 1/16 of an inch deep and 3/4" long. The tank is 120g and I am worried about my floors and the wall it is facing. Has anyone had a similar chip and how worried should I be?

From that photo it's hard to tell how deep it is. But if it's a new tank, make them take it back. If it's a used tank, either they take it back or make you a discount offer you can live with.

I had a 180g with a chip at one end similar to yours. It was about 1/3rd of the thickness of the glass. It never failed in 5 year and it was already an old tank. But you are starting out and it's a new tank to you and didn't have the chip when you bought it. I'd ask for a 50% off or a full refund, then if they offered 30% I'd probably take it. But again, I can't tell how deep it is or how thick the glass is.

Good luck.

Agree with the above, I'd want the tank in the same condition I purchased it in.

Agree with the rest. With a chip like that you will have no way to tell if there are any micro fractures in the glass that could lead to a failure a day, week, month, or even a year from now.

Regardless if it would leak or not send it back. If not it’s going to be a eye sore and something you will always worry about. Not to mention if you decide you want to get rid of it it’s going to be hard to recoup any of your money with a chip like that.

They chipped it. They should replace it.

I would be concerned about cracking from each edge of the chip when full. Send it back

You get what you pay for AND in this respect, you paid for a new tank- YOURE ENTITLED TO A NEW TANK without flaw.
Any chip is a potential weak spot and is Unacceptable. That discount can end up in a future replacement of a floor or carpet and even electrical hazards !!

I agree with the other posters, that if you paid for a new tank it should arrive with no chips, and no flaws. I would contact the manufacture and explain the situation. How was the outside of the box when it arrived, any damage?

Demand a new tank or your money back. Chips like that are dicey. You may get lucky like Reefman but I would not risk it. Having said that if you do make a deal to keep it at a minimum I would purchase an automotive glass repair kit and fill it. It may and I emphasize MAY prevent it from fracturing.

Also, very important..... as you are resolving this, take lots of pictures- the tank, the packaging, the damage, etc. This is your proof for claim resolution.

Even if it were used, the chip wasn't there.

Replacement is warranted.

Now, after you get the replacement, offer to buy it at a deep discount. Two builds are better than one! LOL!

Only a replacement would satisfy me, I would even charge them for the delay that they have caused me for sending a chipped tank.

Thank you all for the feedback. They came back out and did put in writing that the structure of the tank is not compromised, still covered by warranty and offering some store credit. I have documented the conversations, have taken photos and are following up with them in writing. Will wait on their reply and then determine which direction I want to pursue.

Sorry, regarding some of the comments around packaging. We brought it from the floor of the shop, it was a new tank and stand combo that was drilled. It still had the Aqueon label on it and I was told it was brand new, never held water. Someone had ordered it and then decided to go with something else. My wife took pictures from multiple angles while it was on the shop floor the day we purchased it. This proves the chip was not there when we made the purchase since the painted back makes it stand out. I was not home when it was delivered and installed. It was when I was looking at how it was plumbed that I noticed the issue and called them immediately to complain.
