Hello,

Not an immediate emergency but I didnt know where else to post.

I am setting up a 180 gallon tank that I had in storage for a while. Something has come back that I forgot about... The aquarium is a rimmed 180 that measures 72.5"x24.5" with the trim. The stand was made 72"x24". Doing the math leaves 1/4" all around the stand that the aquarium would hang off. When I first had it set up, I put a thin piece of plywood on top so all the edges were touching, I had it like this for two years, no issues, silicone is still fine.

I am now curious to hear what people think about this. I will be using 3/4" plywood this time. Does this seem like it would pose problems in the future? With a 180 the trim is thick (wide) so most of the trim is being supported directly on the stand, with that 1/4" being supported on the plywood. I attached a picture of the metal frame stand, its a very strong, sturdy build. My thought is to make the plywood come out an inch or so pass the end of the tank which should give even more support.

I believe I am overthinking but would appreciate any input!

Any ideas?

I see no problem with your idea.

I think that using 3/4 ply will be fine as well. With just 1/4" overhand all around I cannot believe that the plywood will deflect at all.
