Tank overhangs the stand

I have a small but sturdy wood stand that I would like to put my 20gal. glass tank on. However, the measurements don't match up. The stand is 23" while the tank is 24" and would overhang. Can I simply put a 24" Maple wood board that's 0.75" thick under the tank to support it? I know I can go get plywood at home depot, but it seems none are in stock in the size that I need. Delivery to store will take 10-12 days. I have the board above in hand. Is there anything to worry about?

Honestly..if you are level you should be fine. May look like crap but i dont see a problem with it. Given a 20 gallon tank, I dont see enough weight on the pressure points to cause any type of problem.

Whatever 3/4" board you want to put under your tank will work just fine. I would, however, seal it will with something. Paint or polyurethane would work best.

Lots of the new rimless tanks with modern stands have a bit of hangover on the front edge so that the front doors are even with the front glass. I'm not sure what the acceptable amount is though.

Any board will do just make sure you account for the brace of the tank. Might be 24.25 and not 24 inch. I'd make a board 25 or 26 wide to have wiggle room.

Plywood is better as dimensional lumbar is almost never straight and square. It will twist, bow, warp, etc with moisture. I'd get a nice piece of hardwood Plywood and some iron on veneer banding to fancy the edges. Then stain and poly, just poly, or use a nice oil based primer and enamel paint to seal.

I agree with this as well. Also, depending on the finish on the stand, you can place some wood molding around the tank and hide the wood floor.

So the board turned out to be a bit warped. All 4 corners of the tank make solid contact but there is a gap between the board the front and back brace. Can I use shims?

You can probably use it - BUT - putting a 24inch maple board or melamine or something - seems like a abetter idea. Additionally - Home Depot will cut plywood, etc to whatever measurements you need (you just have to pay the price for the big price.

I would not take any chances with warped and e even wood. It could put too much stress on the glass. Just get a new piece from Home Depot. You don't have to buy a full sheet and offer smaller sheets. They will even cut it to your specific size.

Looking at my local home depot, they don't actually have plywood that they offer custom cut on in stock. Has to be shipped to the store and will take 10-14 days :confused:

Most Home Depot‘s have a section where the plywood is kept where half and quarter sheets are available and already cut and perhaps other sizes as well. You won’t need anything too thick, probably 3/8 or half inch and you could have them cut that to whatever size you need.

I guess I'm not sure why you would think Home Depot plywood would be less warped/out of level than a .75 inch piece of maple. As long as its level - it should be fine - right? BTW - I might consider polyurethaning the maple to water-proof it to a degree.

You are totally correct. Makes no difference as long as it’s level and for sure using some polyurethane to seal it to keep from warping is a great idea.

My 40 breeder was too big for the table I put it on. So I removed the bottom plastic frame and siliconed it to a piece of 3/4" plywood. Then trimmed it out with oak. I used it that way for several years with no problems.
