Would a top of the line hob skimmer be a better option than the overflow and sump?

Sump would be a better option as a sump allows you to place other types of equipment, and filter media, adds to the volume of the system.

When you want to add a skimmer it can go in the sump as well.

Agreed.
However, my 30 cube is sumpless and yet again I am underwhelmed by my skimmer performance(this time a tunze), I am likely going back to a HOB filter or canister filter. Im also looking at the Comline in tank filter.
