I'd love to build a secondary smaller tank to house a peacock mantis (Odontodactylus Scyllarus) and a bunch of corals, and I am currently doubting what kind of tank and size I should be looking at.

I was thinking something along the lines of a Red Sea Reefer 170 G3, but is that wide enough at 60cm? Or should I be looking at a 80-90cm wide tank.

What about all the red sea horror stories, with sudden flash bursts? Is that still a problem? A company close to me builds custom tanks and they are a bit more expensive since it's all custom work, including the cabinet. But if the few hundred it would cost me extra give me more peace of mind, that is worth it to me.

Thanks!

If it were me, I'd probably want an acrylic tank. That being said, I've seen folks keep them in 10 gallons without issue (and obviously without other inhabitants that aren't intended to be food)

For a Peacock specifically? Those are pretty big spuds, and I usually see 40 gallons as a recommended tank size.

I'd still prefer a glass tank, if I go the custom route I can specify the thickness and I believe they default to 12mm (1/2 inch) thick glass. Putting eggcrate on the bottom or rubber strips should mitigate him/her breaking the bottom glass.

I struggle to believe the 10 gallon recommendation. My local LFS has one as their mascot, it lives in a 60cm wide tank but that just seems small to me in comparison to the size of the animal.
