Thanks for bringing me back to reality haha. Obviously they are doing things right or else they wouldn't have a show. I just wish they would show what they did right so It doesn't look like they are doing terrible things.

Well of course there is going to be good and bad about a show like this. Hopefully people will do their homework when starting an aquarium and hopefully they will come here to get the info! :)

Most tangs come in with ich, fortunately being a fish only tank it can be kept in hypo-salinity or treated with copper with no ill affects...

Not only do they handle the fish pretty badly and make no effort the properly QT the fish, they don't seem to be very aware of the care of the fish either. Just take the shark tank alone. They put temperate horn sharks and leopard sharks that come from 50-60F degree water in the same cramped exhibit with blacktips that come from tropical waters. Even if the temperature is okay for the blacktips, the tank is way to small for them to properly thrive and grow.
Thumbs down that's for sure, embarrassed that I even watched it.

we watched last night and really liked it - but thats because we understand it for what it is
obviously their fish care/selection/over crowding/acclimation/qt/cycling and basically all the husbandry stuff was seriously lacking and basically ridiculous but that is not what the show is about
its called "tanked" - its about building really cool acrylic aquariums
i do feel though it will lead to some negitivity about the hobby by those who don't understand true hobbiest like most the people on this site do not treat the animals we place in our care with such disregard
maybe some of our feedback to them - if done in a constructive way - may actually educate them about fish care and ethics as they show off their amazing designs
and as many have suggested they obviously must have experienced and knowlegable people behind the scenes caring for those aquariums - hopefully some of our concerns may lead them to highlite the husbandry aspects more in future episodes and put a more positive light on the treatment and care of fishes in our hobby

I think in general they showed a disregard for the animals that they keep. If they truly cared about the potential impact of the show on lay people coming into LFSs and buying fish and throwing them in, they could have easily done a time capsule (after 5 weeks) or a disclaimer (we cycle our live rock/filtration/everything ahead of time; you shouldn't fill a tank immediately like this). They could have explained that some fish will get too big for their exhibits and they will move them into another tank. They did nothing to educate anyone and I thought that animal planet was supposed to at least marginally be about education. If you say, "Well, it's just entertainment", I think you give them a pass. If these guys are actually skilled aquarists (and I would imagine they would have to be), they should know the possible harmful impact this kind of show would have on the average layperson.
I was working in a fish store when Finding Nemo came out and suddenly tons of people wanted to set up 20 gallon tanks with hepatus tangs and a pair of clowns. That was a cartoon and people wanted to do that. What happens when it's actually "real life" and these same people buy fish and kill them because they don't see everything that goes on in the background? I didn't sell to those people and generally tried to educate them. Not every LFS will do that. Not every employee will catch when someone doesn't know what they're doing and will kill a bunch of fish.
Anyway, I think this was irresponsible, not terribly entertaining, and not something that will get watched in my household. Unfortunately, like Jersey Shore, I'm sure this will be heavily watched and revered by the American public.

I don't get it. Everyone is afraid of the consequences of the show because of "new hobbyists" wanting to start a tank after watching said show and kill fish because they are not properly educated. I must have forgot, you guys all knew everything about salt water tanks when you decided to start in the hobby. You made no mistakes, and you killed no fish. Hahaa

Truth is, if someone wants to start a tank after watching the show, most of them will take the same path we all took when we started. Going to a LFS, asking questions, and trial and error. Then they might venture to a place like this and get some great info about husbandry and tank maintenance.

First off, I have only seen the pilot episode so I don't know what happened last night, I'm just going off the responses that are here.
I totally agree with this, seems everyone is quick to jump to conclusions here. You don't know what happens behind the scenes. I know of a couple of local big reality shows that have made it be known in the local area that the network provokes the people on the show to "do things" that aren't common practice to make the show more interesting to the watcher.
Both Ax Men and Deadliest Catch are local to me, you probably don't watch them but if you do here are a few things that I have heard about them.
When Rygard hires a new greenhorn on the Ax Men show the greenhorn is picked by the producer and they go for the person who is most likely not going to succeed at the position. Also a few years back there was an episode where a loader caught on fire, that didn't happen! I was told they placed a metal bucket with debris in there and lit it on fire for the effect, this is called a smudge pot...
A few years back captain Jonathan fell off the Time Bandit at dock, I heard that was staged and he was paid for it.
Now I have no proof of this and it all could be untrue but I honestly could imagine a producer prodding a show for drama and cool things to happen...
I think what people should be more concerned with is getting ready for the influx of newbs and be ready and willing to help them out. People forget that there was somebody that helped them through newbness. Just think if people spent the time answering questions instead of ranting about a show...

Also do you all honestly think that the guys from ATM don't notice the ich, etc and plan on treating it? These are new tanks and from what I have seen/heard void of corals and easily treated... I am sure there is med's added to the water, it's just not interesting to the public's eye so it isn't shown on TV. As for the overcrowding, I am not sure what to say about that. I hope it is just for TV and the WOW factor and the fish load is reduced to a manageable number off screen...
Just by reading all the comments it is apparent to me that they need to do a special segment with some factoids. A lot of the show's I watch have factoids that air just after the commercials and I find them very informative. Or even better yet they could have a disclaimer at the beginning of the show saying if you wish to start a marine aquarium please visit Reef2Reef first and learn about the venture you are heading into!!!:wink:

we are so fast to judge that is so true .. we all have started out somewhere and made a ((( TON ))) of mistakes doing it .. i think the show was really good .. loved some of the fish they were picking out .. the tank thay did for the hotel was awesome the L was great .. yea the cycling was kind of spooky but i wonder what kind of water they were using .. saw alot of hoses being tapped but dont know where it was coming from .. wonder if they use PRIME :squigglemouth:

I feel they did a terrific job of shownig the potential consumer many of the ideas which people have for the hobby. Just because they didnt show themselves applying glue to every side of the glass by no means does it mean they didnt. This isnt a user guide or a HOW TOO.... this is entertaining its not a scientific documentary. Many of us start to analyze what we saw without taking into consideration we all have a different interpretation of the show at hand. Take it at face value, YES, many of you here dont need ideas for anything, but im sure just like the American Chopper show it got new and excited people into our amazing hobby. Be thankful you hold in ur hand the key to it all........ its called a channel changer. Caution you may have to replace the batteries every so often.(in case no one gave you the user manual)

I am not surprised by the show. It's for entertainment. I personally enjoyed it but I have to admit I do watch "reality" tv. LOL. Reality shows are not really reality as most of us know. So much is staged or otherwise it gets boring. The entire scene in which Wayde's wife is in the shark tank was obviously staged. I'm sure they have lots of people on staff who could have put in the decorations. I'm also sure they knew that there were sharks in the tank already.
It would be nice if they could balance the Wow and entertainment with responsible reefkeeping.
Posting that sharks are a top 5 fish to get on their website is not the way to go. I am concerned that there will be lots of people wanting to rush out and get a shark tank. It's so easy to buy shark eggs.

It looked like they used tap water abd salt, got it up to temp, then loaded the tank with huge fish. I really do not get it.

I think many people are forgetting a HUGE factor here too, that these are fish only tanks which are extremely easy and far less variables to go wrong than a Reef tank with live corals. Keep salinity stable and ammonia and Ph in check and that's it
