I was just on your site and tried to build a package but no amphipods currently.

Can you please recommend a 3 part package for me?

Part 1 my new 150 is just completing cycle. I currently have no life in it but the 40# of live rock in the sump. The display has 120# of Marco and 60# of aragonite giving me a 2” bed.

I’m looking for a start on the sand and Marco. I see pods on the live rock but I want to seed and then feed the whole tank. So I’ll need pods and PHYTO.

I’ll also want something stirring the sand so a small cuc to start makes sense with the expectation to supplement that later.

I plan to dose phyto once the pods go in.

Part 2 I would like to grow pods and phyto eventually. I see you have lots of options what should I plan for 3 strains? Green brown and red?

Part 3 is coral going in so long term cuc. I’ve read both good and bad with hermits. Some of the snails in your package I have never used. But this Marco has a ton of nooks and crannies. I’d be interested in your feedback on what an appropriate final cuc should be.

Thanks for reaching out. At your stage I would recommend our Majestic Pod buffet as it includes all four of our benthic pods which are going to be most beneficial to combat the ugly stage. Being a double pod (2x the density) a 32 Oz would be ok and a 1/2 gallon would be the nuclear option. Dosing live phytoplankton will also help as it will consume nitrates and phosphates helping to outcompete the nuisance algae. I recommend 1 ml per actual system volume. With your sump fuge and all the rock I will use 150 as a guess, but you may know exactly what you put in. At 150ml a gallon would dose around 25 days. Refrigerated and shaken at least every three days, but daily if dosing daily, industry standard is three month viability, we recommend 4-6 weeks as we like it fresh.

At this time we are building our amphipods back up, and hope to have them harvestable when I return from reef stock 10/6.

As for clean up crew, I would not recommend adding any at this stage. Your tank, sand and rock all appear very bare. If you were to add CUC you would need to augment their diet with sinking pellets or nori, which may just cause issues with increased nutrients and cause more issues than it fixes. Wait until you see some algae forming and they should arrive before it takes too great of a hold, especially with a good pod population.

Culturing can be very rewarding and also a little stressful lol. We do offer kits with everything you need, plus 24/7 tech support (as long as I am awake) via email, text and phone calls. We want anyone using our systems to find success. A green, brown and red would give you a fairly broad nutritional profile so yes that is a great combination.

I too have read about crabs picking at corals. My personal experience was an emerald picking at a pipe organ. I noticed right away as two days earlier we had my wife’s mother in from out of town as I was showing her our tanks and bragging about that coral as it was a tiny frag and now it was like 6-7” in diameter. Suddenly it wasn’t opening up and I saw the emerald on it. I rehomed the emerald right then, but the Liberian never recovered. It is my belief that the emerald was on the pipe organ because it was going bad, not that the pipe organ went bad because of the emerald.

That being said, I have read and heard that the pithos crab is much less aggressive. We offer both, but my new choice would be the pithos. I have the same opinion of blue legs. I have had them from the start, only issue is they will take out snails when they outgrow their shell, but this can be avoided by supplying additional empty shells to the tank.

We offer packages that are set up by size for CUC member quantities, but happy to share my choices.

With crabs I would do Blue Leg and Pithos. Adding Cerith snails, Trochus snails, and our Zebra Turbos. Basically a prettier Mexican turbo and from Florida so more suited to our tropical tank temps. Astrea are awesome herbivores, but since the downside of not being able to right themselves. They are inexpensive though so if willing to take some losses they are a great addition for when the tank takes the ugly turn (unless the pods and Phyto keep it from happening).

Sand stirrers, I love a combination of fish and CUC. Sand sifting gobies, wrasses that bury themselves watchman gobies and others. Mixed with the fish I like serpent and brittle stars as they are just cool to watch. Sand sifting stars do great work as well. With a 150 gallon tank, you could do fighting conchs, vase conchs, slider conch all three reef safe. Nassarius snails are awesome as well. The Vibex are tiny so would take a lot for a 150, but our Tongan Nassarius and now our Black Nassarius get quite a bit larger, these snails are the scavenger kings in any tank.

I like urchins, but they definitely need algae. If your tank is staying clean, they will need nori or sinking algae pellets or wafers.

As far as quantities, when you are ready reach out and I will recommend based on what shape your tank is coming through at, and also possibility of new products and species as we have added another wholesale source and they have new items I haven’t seen weekly.
