Love the Goldens. I tried taking a picture of mine yesterday and no luck. They would come out and take a bite and run back under a rock. I have one captive bred, the other is wild caught.
Here is a picture of a pair I purchased from DD in 2015 $300. The one developed a very large stomach and perished after two years and I sold the other

My smaller CB Regal always has squabble with the male Flame Angel results in minor fins damage. I think as he gets larger this will resolve.
The smaller of my Majestic Angel still hold up in the rock structure in the back L corner of the tank. Hope she, like the larger Magestic, will gain the length of the tank as she gets larger.
Tight now my larger Magestic, both of the Regals and all of the Flame angels swim throughout the tank while the smallest of the Angel, the smaller Majestic stays in the L back side of the tank. 9 angels in my tank.

They're a gorgeous fish. It truly is ironic that they are so cryptic/ secretive. For all my years in the hobby I'd ever seen two irl - One at Old Town Aquarium (back when they were in the city) and then at the old Living Seas in Park Ridge - older Chicago reefers will know lol.

My pair is in a 155 gal bow front purpose built for sps. I built-out the rock scape with an open lattice work so they're literally next to a bolt hole any and everywhere. I think that's likely emboldened them slightly. Large one was added after the other had been in the tank 6 months. They paired off immediately.

I feel like this one of those fish with very specific needs. They probably need those cryptic areas to hide and chew on sponge - at least when wild ones are getting established. My guy now eats everything as does the older one.

Lovely fishes. Owning a golden angelfish has always been my dream. I think it would be a tank specifically made for it. I'd also love to add Mulribarred angelfish, Venustus, and Colin's angelfish. The latter would be almost impossible, given the high price tag it already commands. The key issue for me is temperature; these are subtropical fish that require cooler temperatures.

The captive bred I have had for over a year. They are both in a 40 gallon breeder with a small black tang scopas hybrid, spotted mandarin and one large pistol shrimp. The 40 sits next to my 180 and was used as a isolation tank where I introduced new fish and made sure they were eating and disease free before going into the 180 or my office tank. Orions Majestic angel pair started in this tank before making the trip to Corpus. The pictures below contain fish that traveled through like a captive bred imperator, yellow tangs(now in my 180) and Orions majestic angels

Have any of you had previous experience with juvenile emperor angels in a reef tank? How do they behave with soft corals?

@mfollen will attest that eventually, nearly all will turn destructive as they grow.

However, I have seen large pomacanthus angels successfully kept, long term 5-7 years, in softie reefs featuring large toadstools, Kenya tree, chilli coral, grandis palys, and discoma mushrooms.

Both were service accounts for the shop I worked at in high school. This was the late 90’s so different time, mentality, reefing aesthetic. Both were extremely satisfying Aquariums to view and help maintain.

I love venestus! Good luck. I had a pair that quickly nipped at acropora. Gorgeous fish.

Regarding the emperors, so long as you don’t mind a lack of PE and some coral eating, you can keep them with stony corals too. But youd likely be best not keeping the -high end strains and sticking with more resilient SPS and acros

The male Flame angel does not pay nice with most angel species of the same size or smaller, especially timid docile angels. Golden angels really need low stress, problem free tank. I had opportunity to get a pair of CB Golden Angels but did not but to the fact that I have a large rowdy tank, the price, and the thought of how much it would hurt if my Flame harassed them to death.

I have a harem of Flame angels in the 180. Flames do not play nice with Goldens, I tried that once

I ended up with a spare Shepards/False Shepards Angel. I briefly considered adding him to the tank with the goldens but I really don’t wanna risk what I have.

Know someone on r2r did a nice write up on building out mixed wrasse harems based on temperament and familial relations. Obviously some dwarf angels can be kept in harems where as others are inclined to be monogamous. I wonder if anyone has some deep experience experimenting with mixed dwarf Angel harems.

If I could I’d add a multi bar pair in with the goldens… but then at what point are you tempting fate by gilding the Lily?

@alton @OrionN I think the problem with Goldens in most tanks is that they don’t have the same habits as most other dwarves. They aren’t ones to openly cruise in and out of the rocks and be a constant swimmer like the Flame or a Coral Beauty or Lemonpeel or Bicolor. They pick a spot, stick to to it, and are found in a more hidden part of the reef structure with few competition and few or no bigger or active fish sharing the space with them.
