I love astronomy and viewing the Sun is a big part of the experience. Our Sun is studied by several satellites 24 hours a day for both the research to understand the dynamics of our star, and to be able to warn Earth based technologies of solar storms, their intensities, and their affect on our electronics.
This link shows a video of an intense solar flare that luckily was not aimed at the Earth when it erupted.....

Our Sun has been in a deep solar minimum for quite some times and our solar activity has been weak for the last 2 decades, however we are approaching a solar maximum that will peak by 2013 according to NASA models. The increased solar storm activity is really scary when you figure in the effects of what could happen according to this report.........
As the Sun Awakens, NASA Keeps a Wary Eye on Space Weather - NASA Science
In interviews with NASA Director Dick Fischer, he claimed that "We know it is coming but we don’t know how bad it is going to be,†Dr Richard Fisher, the director of Nasa's Heliophysics division, said in an interview with The Daily Telegraph.
“It will disrupt communication devices such as satellites and car navigations, air travel, the banking system, our computers, everything that is electronic. It will cause major problems for the world.
“Large areas will be without electricity power and to repair that damage will be hard as that takes time.â€
Dr Fisher added: “Systems will just not work. The flares change the magnetic field on the earth that is rapid and like a lightning bolt. That is the solar affect.â€
He explained further in an article in Sky and Telescope Magazine that in 1859 the Earth experienced a large solar flare that was witnessed by observers and subsequently all telegraphs were disrupted for 3-7 days later. This affected the business of the day, communications, and train travel.......
On September 1–2, 1859, the largest recorded geomagnetic storm occurred. Aurorae were seen around the world, most notably over the Caribbean; also noteworthy were those over the Rocky Mountains that were so bright that their glow awoke gold miners, who began preparing breakfast because they thought it was morning.
Telegraph systems all over Europe and North America failed in some cases even shocking telegraph operators. Telegraph pylons threw sparks and telegraph paper spontaneously caught fire. Some telegraph systems appeared to continue to send and receive messages despite having been disconnected from their power supplies.
Our electrical grids across the world use EHV transformers......

So, if we were to have a strong solar storm that could push the Aurora as far south as Cuba we would stand a strong chance of losing power throughout the Midwest and East coast that could last for months or even up to a year before power is restored!!! The reason is the time it would take to make repairs to the system.
With all that said, I am wondering? "what would you do for you and your family if you were without power for up to a year?"
I also want to know if you have a back up plan for short term power outages?
I have access to a generator if needed. Do you?
Please respond as I am very curious as to what people would do with out power for a year. I mean without power you would not have sewer, gas, electric, or running water. No refrigeration or cooling, and no heating for that matter. What would your survival plan be?
