No its an elk

The elk in Europe is Alces alces and the word (like the Swedish Älg) probably originate from the latin alces or the german elch. To be total correct - the word moose refers to the american sub species Alces alces americana. The animal some americans name for elk is really a large species from the family Cervus. the European red deer is a smaller species from the same genus The oldest name on this animal is wapiti and it is from the Shawnee and Cree word waapiti - means white rump. If we call them something - it is wapiti.

At the time for the first british invasion of North America - the real elk was extinct from the British Isles for a long time. The immigrants had nothing to compare with and Linne¨s system natura was not yet published - they simple borrow names from the native language:s they meet- in this case probably from the old word moosu meaning he strips off. As you can see in these videos - there is no elk with horns because the male strips them off during the autumn (your fall :D )
