Because sometimes the people that you think are unqualified, or undeserving of a high salary are getting paid way more than they should. When you find out, you demand a raise and the company can no longer afford the pay rates.

Jealousy is the main problem- people are greedy and coworkers will bash each other when money comes into the mix.

Exactly. It's all about the bottom line of the company and we all buy into it and comply. One should be paid based on knowledge and skill rather than negotiating ability. Anyone disagree?

Also, I mean it's not just a workplace taboo, but seemingly a social more as well. Like one is more likely to talk about their sex life than to reveal their salary. Why is it so deeply engrained in us?

Lol you have never dealt with whiney employees have you. Any person I have ever managed is perfectly happy with their pay until they find out someone else makes a dime more than them.

If people actually got paid based on knowledge and skill it would be a miracle. Logically it makes sense but the people currently getting a high salary to go golf and make deals all day will do whatever is necessary to stay in power.
The pay system needs a reboot.

Im in federal law enforcement. We all know what each other make based on time in grade.

Many people perform similar, but not exactly the same job functions. One of those people may have a skill that necessitates a higher pay in order to retain them. In some industries headhunters are constantly calling and emailing employed people in an effort to steal them from their employer. A higher pay may be needed for that skill or knowledge. People often don't realize everything g their coworkers do either, and that leads to misperceptions that both do equal amounts of, or the same type of work.
