I just went and looked through some old photos and found this one from the day I picked her up in early April. After looking at the old photo, it’s a lot more clear that she’s been growing and changing than I thought.

It’s certainly different. Same genus as the humphead wrasse which is crazy since that reaches 90” and over 400lbs. Luckily this one is a bit smaller.

Any thoughts on the two spot Māori wrasse, Cheilinus bimaculatus? My LFS had 3 today.

They’re somewhat reef safe with the caution of I believe smaller fish ontop of the inverts. On the aggression scale I’d probably say they’re in the middle, possibly more towards the high aggression as mature adults.

Thanks! I was reading they are surprisingly shy but also smei-aggressive. Annoyingly the book mentions them but does not give them a profile. Gives the undulatus a profile despite it being, as said before, a behemoth and endangered so very illegal.

You can still get a sweet mild-mannered undulatus. Eats pods.

I love watching that tank and these two are a big reason for it and always have been.

Eventually, I'd love to replace my 110 with a 180-200g and not have poorly placed holes along the back that gives jumpy fishes places to die.
I'd love to have tank filled with pretty wrasses...

I wonder about the pricing on a lot of these wrasses. Has to do with scarcity or mostly by looks? E.g., why is Cirrhilabrus earlei so expensive? Does it look that much better than lineatus, or any other Cirrhilabrus for that matter?

I think the earlie is so pricey because it is found in pretty deep water, and any fish that requires rebreathers to collect almost always means big bucks required. And fish from certain places are also harder to collect or are scarce because of the infrequency of dive trips to places like the Marshall Islands, other remote places. Although I can’t help but think some fish pricing has gone the way of torches in recent years. Torches are not rare by any means really, yet the prices have climbed and stayed high.

Those magenta-ish stripes sure are pretty though :)
