The Wrasse Lover's Thread!

This is the whitest I could get at the moment haha
Looks like a beautiful “Supermale” mel. I wish we had a set definition for supermale at this rate and not just throw it around, I mean the prices for a supermale are high and some of them aren’t actually bright in colours.

To tell the difference between them isn’t the number of vertical lines by dorsal have something to do with it.
Melanurus vs. chrysotaenia? If so, Sean is right. Melanurus has lines on the caudal and more saddles; Chrysotaenia has spots on the caudal and less saddles. Also, mature melanurus males typically have a closed or almost closed loop pattern on their cheek, typically chrysotaenia doesn't (this isn't 100%).

Great news!

The moyers came out and ate ravenously! She was certainly hungry.

My little melagris just won't stop chasing it though. Doesn't seem to be aggression, just a show of dominance kind of chasing. Few minutes later, back in the sand.

I'm glad it came out and ate, that makes me happy! I'm sure the chasing will eventually stop. The pintail could care less now, just the dang melagris.

Try a mirror for the meleagris for a few days. Ir worked well with my wrasses and tangs in the past.

Here's a pictoral of what SaltyT said.

I don’t know if it’s lighting but that Mel posted before looks more like a Vrolik.

Nevermind, I looked at the photo again and that does look like a mel just with the saddles (All the photos I saw online showed no saddle at all).

Got any photos under whites?
He, because I belive it has transitioned to male since I have kept it, is sleeping in the sand at the moment. I can get some fresh pics under whites in about 10-12 hours.

The cuddle spot is now completely gone and the yellow around the pectoral is much more prominent.

The stripping on the cuddle make me say melanurus.

The striking increase in the yellow around the pectoral fins (not pictured) make me question.

I’d say chrysotaenia, only because the saddles go to half way up the body. Someone else may be able to ID it properly - Mines just a rough assumption.

Pulling a wrasse out of QT. It looks like t will be a few days of jail...

I cant clearly see in the video but what is the other species? One looks to be a Labouti.

Looks like a melanurus to me. The dots or lines on the tail are much more reliable than the saddles IMO. This fish has continuous blue lines on the tail, not spots. No expert but that's what I remember Hunter saying about distinguishing these two.

OK 500ish photos later here are the five decent ones all under the whitest setting on the Kessils.
I was always under the impression that it was a melanurus.

It isn't fully matured yet, but without a doubt it is a melanurus.
