The Wrasse Lover's Thread!

Ok so which Nahackyi do you all like better? These are both terminal males. @saltyhog was supposedly going to send me a pic but hasn’t yet :face-without-mouth::squinting-face-with-tongue: So what do you guys think? Am I correct to believe @i cant think and @Lost in the Sauce pics the first one? :beaming-face-with-smiling-eyes:

The wrasse? Wow. Hungry little buggers. I added less than a 2 dozen ghost shrimp to my tank not too long ago. And my Angel got ahold of most of them, but my Clowns actually at one. Didn’t think they would but hey ho.
Oh yeah
I added 125 and my eels hardly got any with the wrasse, triggers, and hawkfish going wild.
Wrasse are vicious hunters.

The black background on the top pic makes it look like the black dorsal spike is missing from this Nahackyi, but it’s there.

Here’s mine it’s tough to get a pic with his dorsal up because he’s usually zooming through the tank when it’s up, but here he is.

It sounds too quick to have been just a simple dive into the buckets. Wrasses panic however they don’t usually damage themselves that badly in such a short period of time.
It could have been aggression from being in such a little area with not many hiding spots (if any).
No signs of damage of any kind

Top one may be in nuptial display.

Maybe but @SaltyT posted a picture of one that looked very similar in color and I don’t think it’s displaying or in courtship.

The top seems to be the ‘healthiest’ with the better colouring however if you can I’d personally grab a female as you’ll get the best life span out of it but also you may actually get nicer colours from it.

The bottom also seems healthy however it seems faded in the fins, although this is sometimes caused by not having the need to display their fins and therefor not needing to show full colour. My Naokoae has faded towards the back of his dorsal and in his anal fin and it’s purely because he almost never displays.

Thanks for the tip. I’ll do that then cause I want to have the fish for as long as possible. How long would you say the wrasse turn from female to male?

So that’s something I’m hoping I don’t need to worry about since there will be multiple female/male wrasse. This way I can ensure they all flash/display frequently. Naoko are a really pretty fish when displaying but since your Naoko tends to not mind your other wrasse, the poor guy stays with his fins folded and you just see the red yellow and white. This is why I want to add my Naoko second or third of all the wrasses so it gets to be in the tank earlier, and that when other wrasses are added, the Naoko and flare and dive bomb them and other fish. I’ve never seen a Naoko hurt another fish by divebombing, more of a territorial display. There I can ensure he flashes (hopefully).

My first naokoae displayed every night and loved the tank and dive bombing my corals.
As for how long it’ll take, it really depends on if you’re like @Crabby48 and they transition extremely fast or if you’re like me and females don’t transition as fast.

I'm jealous of how fast @Crabby48 can get his wrasses to transition. I told him to get a black leopard so I can selfishly see it transition lol My black leopard has been with me 3 yrs and just recently turned initial phase. If he gets one it'll turn male a month later :face-with-tears-of-joy:

Do you like the Black ones over the others? (That sounded a lot better in my head)

Negrosensis is a much nicer male IMHO, however marisirubri is also rather close in my list of nicest males :)

Has that kuiteri transitioned for you yet?

Yes, the black leopard is my favorite of the leopard wrasses. Well actually the potter's leopard is, but they're no longer available in the hobby.

Wait they aren’t?

No, she hasn't. She displays at my earmuff and chases him every time they swim by each other so I guess she could still be trying to transition. IDK. Kuiter's leopards are mean so it could just be her attitude.

It’s because you all want them to transition. My radiant took awhile but the rest can be in weeks or days. Honestly small qt tanks seem to help transition faster 1/2 the time. Maybe stress. They all want to be big and manly like dad.

@SaltyT stop coddling so much and @i cant think stop talking in your best baby voice. Play heavy metal and give them whiskey. That is my secret
