Hey everyone,
I'm still debating what wrasse(s) I can add to my current tank.

There is about 1-1.5" sand bed, and I'll add a bit more of the good sand from my Evo.

Swim space:

Lots of macros, hidey holes and caves, but hopefully enough negative space for free swimming.

There is a firefish that lives 90% of the time under the lefthand rock. There is a tailspot blenny that is very active but quick to hide. And there will be two regular occelaris clowns that will be transferred--non-aggressive so far and they swim next to my hand without biting, hang out near return nozzles.

So effectively, the swim space the wrasse(s) will share is 35.4"L x 15.3"W x 10-11"H.

For feeding, I have an autofeeder dropping small TDO pellets 3x/day and this:

pumping in a slurry of Reef Nutrition food 3x during the day and once in the evening (adjustable to up to 24x/day). Reef Nutrition mix is: Oyster Feast + ROE + Roti Feast + Pac Pods + Arcti Pods + Phyto Feast. There is also Mysis feast in there, but I am not going to add it anymore and just add Mysis feast manually, since it sometimes clogs.

Here are the wrasses that I love so far, kind of in order. I already know a lot of them are not going to work in this tank, but I am interested in your opinions. Note: I left off all flashers, and I don't know most of the Anampses, Halichoeres, Labroides, Pseudocheilinus and Pseudojuloides.

I definitely see enough sand for Halichoeres, Macropharyngodons, and Anampses. I honestly wouldn’t add any Paracheilinus, Cirrhilabrus, Labroides or Pseudos sorry. These guys need that long swimming area just to simply be comfortable. How big is your tank btw? I prefer space over volume but volume is still important. You could probably get away with a Halichoeres and a Macrophary for some time, but then they would also need an upgrade in a few years time, and not counting aggression.

Or to put it another way I think some of these may work though it is pushing it. Some would definetly like a little more swimming room. And some would be perfectly happy!

As for Anampses they are incredibly beautiful and peaceful but very sensitive and most get big. Halichoeres are too numerous but any 6" or below are good. Labroides can be very difficult and need well stocked big tanks. Pseudocheilinus are peaceful but shy and need long tanks. Pseudojuloides are even more sensitive then Anampses.

In my reading, H. iridis min tank size is usually 50gal (min dimensions, I don't know), and M. bipartitis is 45gal. My tank is a 40gal long AIO. Do you think that is stretching it?

If none of that works, I could just go with a Wetmorella and/or P. ataenia and start dreaming up the next tank in a few years, although I was hoping for more flashy and active.

An isosceles or marjories could maybe be comfy for around a few months, but that would be pushing it a little bit. You could definitely do some Pink Streaks and some Skunks, those would do very well in the tank. Not a wrasse but have you considered pipe fish?

50 gallons minimum and 45 is way too low. Not sure why that would come up but then again google says you can keep like 6 goldfish in a bowl :rolleyes: You can go ahead and add a Macro, but adding a Halichoeres could stretch things a bit though it can work. I would just add a Macro, possibly a pair.

Awesome, thanks! I'll have a good think on the yellows. Plenty of time since my current project is Valonia removal then tank transfer. Will see what the dynamic is then work out the plan!

Same type so bipartitus with a bipartitus. Though it doesn’t have to be a bipartitus. It can be a Choats or a negrosensis or meleagris. I wouldn’t do a vivianae or an ornate as they get bigger and more pushy.

This is one smart wrasse. Watches me unlike the others in the tank. One the camera comes out she shoots behind the rocks. When I put it down she comes right up to the glass yo say hi.

The Iridis being recommended for a 50G tank is insane IMO. My boy is Atleast 5” and he is a calm swimmer but he really uses the 4’ length (One reason I’m looking to upgrade to a 5’ tank is for some more wrasse but also to give some of my current guys a bit more room).
I will admit they’re beautiful fish though so you could have a juvenile then upgrade to a 4’ tank.

Here’s a photo for reference, my tank is a 4’x18” tank (I round it up to get 4’x2’ a lot of the time).

Thanks! Yes, totally new to wrasses. I've tried to set up the feeding system to support them and other high metabolism fish.

H. iridis, gorgeous fish, but out for the 3' tank. Will probably not get a pair and leaning P. ataenia > Wetmorella spp. Imagining 1 M. bipartitus and 1 P. ataenia.

Currently looking at the pipefish @Petcrazyson suggested, but I thought they were even harder to get eating well.

Oh, how could I forget the sixline harem!? SMH

Pinkies are my favourite. I believe this is a photo of my current pair however I started with a trio so one of these may have been the specimen that passed.
