The same adventure is happening with me… No Vivienne’s or Choati has come in.
the Vivienne’s I was told would come in this week but nope. The Choati last came in in March then just never surfaced again.

The longer I have 240 in store credit the more I start looking at Plate Corals. I have around 370 so I may grab a few corals next week.

Plate corals are fun, especially at feeding time.

Watch where you put them though!

What is the best lighting spectrum for your wrasse colors? More whites, I'd imagine--what balance between blues/violets/whites have you found for corals + wrasses? @OrionN what are you using when you take those pictures?

Whiter the light, the better the colors will look.


Suppose I should edit that:

I run T5's and Led combo. I have found that if I run my LED's white(no blue), and all blue and actinic in my T5's I get a good balance between blue enough for coral color, and white enough to bring out the colors of my fish.

I’m waiting for a gorgeous orange plate to appear as the only one at the LFS currently is purple and green and doesn’t look great even with glasses on.

I keep a balance of whites in the day but with 2-3 hours of blues either side of the 7-8 hours of white.

Depends what colors you want to accentuate. Like you can use red and green leds to accentuate that color.
For example same fish on same day but with deep blues you can't see much orange. Under whites the blue fades out.

I was just off the phone with Mike from Dr. Reef who wants to make sure I get a healthy M. bipartitis. Will try out the advice everyone gave here, i.e. shipping in sand, a bit more deflated, etc. Have a call with him tomorrow to discuss potential H. chrysus or H. biocellatus. He says chrysus isn't a good shipper and that biocellatus is better.

So I have a couple questions:

1. Why don't 2-4 inch tusks exist? Tiny juveniles I see occasionally and big 4+ inch ones come around in big numbers each year but nothing in between?

2. Which Thalassoma to get? Hardwicke and goldbar are ugly. Pinkface is a bit too much. Bluehead and blunthead are a bit meh. Lunare and lutescens(banana) are beautiful but too big/aggressive? My LFS claimed the banana is less aggressive then the lunare but its bigger??

T. lutescens is less aggressive than most thalassomas... it would be a good candidate for your aggressive tank.

BTW, your new H. marginatus looks great! I would be very happy if I received that guy.

PSA - be careful ordering a melanurus wrasse from Dr. Reef right now... so far two people on here have received a lunare wrasse instead of a melanurus :eek:

T. lutescens is less aggressive than most thalassomas... it would be a good candidate for your aggressive tank.

Get the wrong beautiful fish (on purpose) sell it to the LFS, get money/credit, complain to seller, get a new wrasse “free”, possibly get higher compensation, BOOM your set and with money/credit for new wrasse :smiling-face-with-sunglasses:

That’s a Gold Rim tang. Do they call these buggers Whitecheecks too? They don’t have any whitecheeks though. I thought Whitecheecks were Powder Browns? Why can’t all of them be titled “jerks” and move on :face-with-tears-of-joy:

Our new Christmas wrasse (about 5.5" in length, so more or less an adult). Came to us via a shutdown tank. We've named him "Wash".

The latin name is white cheek for that spot near the eye. Gold rim is also more common name.

Nigricans and glaucopareius (I never know which is the accepted name but I think both are used) are the same species but let’s make this even more complicated;
Over here we called the Goldrim Tang Acanthurus japonicus
And the Powder Grey Tang is Acanthurus nigricans/glaucopareius x leucosternon
Acanthurus nigricans/glaucopareius is called the Powder Brown Tang

why can’t we just label them all ‘Jerks’ and leave A. nigricans as ‘Pretty tang’.

Wrasse common names are even worse than the tangs.
Almost every Cirrhilabrus/Paracheilinus species is labelled as ‘Dwarf Parrot’ and yes they’re related but they’re not even in the same subfamily.
