I had to get rid of my solar wrasse because of this issue. I got a yellow tail flasher and he picked on him so I took him out of the tank and returned him to the store, found out later he died :( After that since he was the only wrasse he started going after anything similar shaped as wrasse and attacked my anthias. I took him back to the store and got different wrasse. Evoled has put up an awesome chart of which wrasse are aggressive and which are more friendly and ever since I've been going off that to get my wrasse.

Just added a Lubbock's wrasse to my tank. My red head solon wrasse is not a fan. Constantly horrassing and attacking. Only been a day but are they establishing a pecking order or will the my solon never stop attacking? My red velvet could care less with the new lubbock.

It should settle down in another day or two, though may not ever stop completely, as the solorensis will remind the lubbocks of the hierarchy.

Thanks, hopefully it will work out. Kinda funny, until now my solorensis was on the bottom of the totem pole. With all fish in the tank, always shy and gets out of the way. Was the one fish I worried least about when it came to aggression.

It will likely settle down, but there is also a chance that it won't. In that case, you'll need to remove one, or the victim will perish.

@evolved Quick question. I just bought a Hoeven's Wrasse(Halichoeres melanurus)... I had it in QT for about 6 weeks. It was fat and healthy with zero signs of any stress so I put it in my display.... over a week ago. I have only seen it the day I put it in the tank. I Haven't seen it since. Is this normal for a wrass to hid out this long?

Though, not @evolved, perhaps I can help. While most burying wrasses emerge after a day or two, in some instances they may stay buried for an extended period, even as long as a month.

Halichoeres wrasses will bury when threatened. It may be scared from being caught from qt. Also, if it is being bullied it may stay buried.

Yup, and to that I will add NEVER go digging around for it during this time. Let things be; you'll likely see it again in a few days.

Yes, they should be fine together.

A varied diet of mysis, calanus copepods, fish eggs, pretty much any meaty seafood.

My melanarus wrasse is getting old. I don't know how many years I have had him and I certainly don't know how old he was when I acquired him. But he has always been a beauty. The last year or two his color has become truly amazing, a very beautiful shade of indescribable blue. A relatively inexpensive wrasse but in my opinion awfully pretty. He lost the vision in the eye you can see probably a year ago plus but has been doing well regardless. His behavior has changed the last week oe so this may be near his end. I wanted to share a picture of my favorite wrasse. Its not a great picture but there he is nonetheless.

I'm thinking about ordering a Potter's Wrasse (Macropharyngodon geoffroyi).
The website doesn't say male or female.
Do they start life as female, then turn male?
Can you have 2 females and expect one to turn male?

They all start out as female, you can tell by looking at it. Males look completely different. I take it back, sounds like they are very similar but females have lines on face??? will have to let evolved chime in.

That's a really small tank for most wrasses. You could probably get away with either of the pygmy wrasses.

Pygmy Wrasses (Wetmorella sp.) or Pink streak (Pseudocheilinops ataenia) are about the only wrasses that would do well in a 29g.
