It's only been offered for sale a handful of times. But it's pretty much cf. lunatus with yellow fins.

Where does it come from that makes that species so rare, or is there a different factor as to its rarity

Cairns Marine is the only company who collects them, and therefore they control the collection numbers. And it's a bit off their typical paths for collection.

Not sure this adds much; squirei in pink (eastern AUS). cf lunatus is the orange region, northern PNG.

Thanks, i love that group of wrasses so was just curious, almost had the opportunity to buy a pintail but the shop would only sell them as a pair annoyingly.

That's when you offer to buy the female, and let them keep the male. Most places will do that, since it's easy for them to sell a male.

Ill make sure to do that next time, even more frustrating was that the female was so obviosuly turning male with the development of the lance tail and developmet of male colouration and the dominant male was attacking the female to a lot.
Some of my wrasses

Some of the wrasses ive had, last 3 no longer with me unfortunately, had the tamarin wrasse for a year before he succumbed to internal parasites and so did the mccoskers, but have treatment for that now and the pink streak died of what i assume was old age. She had a partner who died before her, and when he died she didnt realise as i had removed him from the tank before she knew, and she didnt eat for like a week and was constantly looking for him, i dont know if that was just a coincidence or what but seemed like they mustve had a good bond, and was possibly pining, however i dont know to what extent that is true.

I've done that. After the initial hesitation etc from the LFS, it works pretty well.

I would do that but i cant really afford both cause im still a bit too young to have that much money lol.

Whys that

Orion has a post on here somewhere about his two male pintails getting along. Normally people frown on getting a pair of wrasses because sooner or later the female becomes a male and they fight. But with pintails they are so docile that does not happen

I wouldn't set that as a rule.
I've had 3 different pintails over the years - one was a puppy, second was rather bold, and the third is middle of the road.
I'd expect most cases of mixing two males of the species not to work out well.

Sorry about that. My LFS sells female wrasses for $40 Although sometimes as a female you can't quite tell what they are?
CF Lunatus Female in my LFS, thought it was a pintail

three months later as a male but not a pintail, but at $40 can't complain

Wow hes beautiful, i live in ireland you see, and the Pair was £185 which is like almost $400 if my maths is correct.
Wish i has an lfs with cool wrasses for that price lol.

You can see why they may have thought it was isoscoles before it transitioned.

I have a CF Lunatus and it's gorgeous - like many Wrasse, the closer you look the more detail and beauty you find.
