Wait...Cyanide WHAT?! What do you mean by this?

Cyanide collection used to be very prevalent. Cyanide is released into the water and it stuns the fish for easy collection. The idea was to use enough cyanide to stun the fish but not enough to kill them. The practice is illegal everywhere (I think, although there may be a few holdouts) now but it seems to still happen with some harder to collect and more expensive species. I recently bought a Copperband Butterfly that I am 90% sure was cyanide collected. It started to get listless, gasped for air and constantly swam into the flow, darted around the tank from time to time and then stopped eating and died with ruptured internals. It is a horrible practice but almost impossible to 100% eliminate.

I don't know if @Jay Hemdal has a better source/explanation but as I understand it some less reputable areas collect some fish with cyanide which can cause a much higher mortality rate.

Correct, many quick or cryptic fish from Indonesia and the Philippines are still collected with cyanide. This causes higher than normal mortality in the first 40 days or so after arrival. Ribbon eels are a poster child for this as they are difficult to catch with just nets.

I think I need to look into a ribbon eel. That is very cool. Any glaring compatibility issues in a mixed reef with inverts? Will my shrimps become snacks?

After reading all of the information posted about cyanide.

Ribbon eels will eat ghost shrimp, table shrimp. I have had no issue keeping skunk cleaners with my ribbon eel.

I dont know about sexy shrimp. But since they like to live on anemones, corals. They are not hunted.

Usually damsels and butterflies, as well as angels and tangs are some of the most commonly collected that way as well, if my memory isn't failing me today.

So - I think the Calado study has been criticized because the thiocyanate test is thought to be flawed. IIRC, another researcher has asked for this study to be withdrawn.

Search “Andrew Rhyne + cyanide” - He is the top researcher in that field. I think he was a project lead /professor for the citation above.

I approach cyanide detection through evaluating the end results: by identifying excess mortality in imported fish. I don’t really care if the issue is cyanide is used or if there is done mother issue - the mortality rate for fish from the Philippines and SE Asia can run 40 to 60% in the first 40 days, while normal mortality from other areas runs 9 to 15%

Not for me they are usually not I'm usually just bad with everything else :loudly-crying-face:
It was the biggest and only fully encrusted acro I got from Battle.
