3 tanks. My newest is a 40 breeder for corals. Oldest is a 65 RedSea I absolutely love. Largest is a 140 for my Regal angels. Only do it if you feel everything is easy now and you are as nuts as I am.

Yeah I may end up just having 1 betta and as many loaches as will be happy. I thought the adult kuhlis were a lot slimmer than bettas but I'm a bad judge of measurements.

1. What would you say to someone who is thinking of setting up a second aquarium?


2. What is one PRO and one CON to setting up a second saltwater tank?

PRO:
More diversity in what you want.
Ability to pinpoint parameters for the type of tank you set up.
Now you can take all you have learned from your other tank and apply it to the new tank.
Second tank = more patience (hopefully).

CON:
It is hard to focus on two tanks, one will always need more attention than the other.
higher costs
One will look more the way you want and the other less so.
Significant other may not fully agree.
More time will need to be put into the tanks.

I have had as many as 5 tanks at once, mix of fresh and salt. Right now I don't have an office tank due to the pandemic, at home I have a 60 gal mixed reef, a 2.5 gal pico reef and a 40 gal planted freshwater.

It seems there is always a fish or invert that I want that isn’t compatible with something else. Hence a kind of reef tank, a FOWLR, a tank just for raising anemones, and a supposed to be quarantine tank that has damsels and shrimp. Now my young daughter tells me that seahorses are her favorite fish, time for a small number five.

I currently have 3 salt, a 350 gal. a 20 gal quarantine and a 90 gal frag. To keep the peace with the wife, I got her a 40 gallon fresh water to take care of. Bad part is, hers looks better then mine. Her bettas keep spawning. she started with two and now has at least 30. Ready to let her just start taking care of the salt and see if she can get more growth out of the corals.

Every time I’ve set up a second tank in the past, both of them ended up looking like crap as I had to take away time from my first tank to maintain the second.

I’d much rather have one 10/10 tank than two 5/10 tanks.

I feel your pain. I'm down to just two freshwater tanks (plus my saltwater). It's a lot of work.

After 6 years I was finally smart enough to stick my fw tanks next to each other on one wall (in the man cave), near the faucet making water changes much easier. Now I can maintenance those 3 in about an hour.

Pros- always have something to do
Cons - no social life... I got no friends, hence the 15 tanks...

Today I was thinking about how many of us have more than one saltwater reef aquarium and if it's actually a good idea or not. The thought of a brand new tank, with new equipment and a new "clean slate" does seem quite attractive. More coral, more fish, more fun right? Is it a good idea? Today I want to hear from all of you crazies who have more than one aquarium.

If you like fish it's the thing to do.

It lets you see that some things are not all water parameters. Mine are all one system on a common sump.
I have 29 gallon, 75 gallon and 240 gallon tanks.
I also have a 55 gallon FW tank.

It's also a lot to get away from you if life things come along.

I have a 150G mixed reef, 54G SPS tank, 3 24G frag tanks, 2 35G frag tanks, a 180G SPS tank, and a 135G sump. Also a 3G beta tank, a 70G turtle tank, a crested gecko, 2 australian shepherds, and a 1 and 3 year old...and a bad car habbit.

my recommendation is to get enough tanks to keep the animals and corals you want, and then stop. It gets extremely time consuming and expensive to keep expanding.

Do the tanks run independently or are they all connected to the same sump? I am thinking of setting up a second tank for frags and connecting it to my main system so I don't have to buy a second set of dosers, trident, etc etc. I think the pros would outweigh the cons. Any thoughts or suggestions to share?

I have 2 tanks. I have a 180g mixed reef tank. And then I have a 29g tank with a RBTA and 2 clowns.

I guess it would depend on what you want. I wouldn't do 2 mixed reef tanks for example. But my 29g tank requires little to no maintenance. A 5g water change on occasion. I don't even do that regularly to be honest, there just isn't a lot of nutrient usage with the tank. I'll get algae from not changing the water, but at the same time that algae is removing nitrates and phosphates, so it cleans the water. I'll clean it up every now and then, change the water etc.

My 180g is constant maintence. I wouldn't want another one of it, and that's with me having never done a water change on it. If I did regular water changes, it would be even worse.

Currently I only have one, hopefully next year I will add a second. There was a time when I had a 10, 29 and 50, but that was way back when I didn’t have a demanding lifestyle.
