Leathers are sometimes so dramatic but I've found their own toxins can bother other leathers.
Ya mine have always been pouty but it seems like I get several years out of some and then they just slowly melt but its just one while all others do fine so maybe the largest toadstool that is my oldest isn't playing nicely. I had a huge sinularia that I lost a year or so ago and now my big cabbage is rotting away. Its strange because the ones that die have been in the tank for a few years not new additions. I suppose I should at least toss some carbon in. Common sense I suppose but I don't run carbon often because of the possiblity of it contributing to HLLE in tangs which I've been able to avoid.
I may just pull this cabbage and cut it up to try and put it in different tank to try ans save a piece.

Well i don't have to worry about introducing the hippo. It made it's way out of the box on its own while I was typing above. Out swimming and even ate when I added some food. I think having the chromis and other smaller fish out and active help out. Purple swam by a couple times to let the hippo know who's boss other than that the other tangs act like nothing has changed. We'll see how it goes but I'm optimistic.

Totally .. I'm sorry about that cabbage leather, I think carbon in reasonable amount shouldn't be HLLE inducing. At least giving it a shot for a week to see if you notice a difference.

I was shy in observation not just the box.

Getting ready for the big warm up and put out some taps. Was able to get a dig in at my Gal for once asking me why I keep so many useless buckets lol.

I once thought I, too, was shy in observation. However, it was after my third visit that I figured out I was confusing being shy with the effects of all the Thorazine they were giving me.

Your dogs are handsome.

And in honor of useless buckets...

Well I heard back from redsea in regards to the seams on reefer 300 and the reply was exactly as I expected. Monitor the area and we'll keep our fingers crossed that it doesn't leak until the warranty expires 🤣

I can't disagree with their assessment but I also know that it isn't going to stop progressing so it's just a matter of letting it fail and hope its in warranty still. I think I'll just add it to the pile with the reefer 170. There's still room for one more redsea tank I think.

Hello David,

Our team has thoroughly reviewed all the photos and information you provided. We can confirm that the seam protectors of your aquarium are functioning properly, and we believe your aquarium is not at risk of failure.

Your aquarium has 1/4-inch (7mm) seam protector strips installed along the bottom and vertical seams. These strips serve as a protective layer for the seams of the aquarium, helping to prevent damage to the main seal that holds the glass together. This damage could potentially occur from cleaning the glass, normal wear and tear, or from algae and crustaceans that burrow into the seams. The measurements in your photos confirm that the structural seams are intact and that the integrity of the aquarium remains unaffected.

We encourage you to monitor this area from time to time and keep us informed if the separation spreads or changes to exceed the quarter-inch mark.

Seams in question for reference . I guess the algae is supposed to magically stop destroying the silicone once it's past the seam guard 🤔

EDIT: Im going to use this post to store info on the reefer 300 seam issue in one place. Any updates are for that reason.
The bottom seam is starting now.
PXL_20260216_232139183.MP.jpg

I intend to let it run just to see where it ends up and whether it fails while under warranty or not. I may move the acros out at some point and use it as an observation tank and shut the 40g in the basement down.

You, unfortunately, are one in a long line of mistreated customers.

It simply blows my mind that people still choose to do business with RedSea for anything. I wouldn't use anything from them if it was given to me.

Ya I can't believe people still buy their products but I suppose in reality the failures are a very small percentage of overall sales. I'm not going to toss my reefdose and reefmat in the trash but when they fail I'll move on. I'm not at all surprised and funny enough I'm not even upset. I must be mellowing in my old age lol

Yeah, well, I think someone should firebomb their factory in Israel. Although I do not know if their factory is in Israel but their HQ is and, maybe their offices should be visited. And this IS the mellow version of me as I, too, have mellowed with age. You should have seen me when I was younger. I was something to behold! LOL!

I do agree with you about not throwing out the baby with the bathwater. They still do make some decent products.

I won't go there with their tanks but most of their products are pretty good, although toward the high cost end of things. I think their new Reef Controllers look interesting. They have a few features that may prove to be innovative.

Yes, Tom, you are right and I forgot about the new control system that have been developing. It does look like it could be very good. It will be interesting to see how it is priced, I suspect it'll be big bucks.

I agree some of their products are well made but after my max nano (though it's been ok) I'm avoiding all Red Sea products just out of principal because of how they conduct business. Not even a bottled supplement from Red Sea.

“We encourage you to monitor your seams from time to time”

Yeah, like every hour. I remember when I caught the bubble in my seam, I couldn’t sleep through the night without thinking I kept hearing my tank leaking downstairs.

Red Sea is a joke.

Leathers haven't been happy lately but I'm not sure why. Im wondering if rhodactis can put out a toxin? Nothing has really changed but they are to the point I'm going to pull all the rock with them that isn't glued together. The tank I bought a few out of years ago was infested with them. They were all over the glass and every surface a available surface. I don't mind a few but I don't want to get overrun.

Rhodactis rocks anyone?

Figured it's been almost a year in observation so time to bring the hippo up. Starting off in an acclimation box and feeding the box so it can get used to all the big guys swimming around. Its a very shy fish which causes some concern but we'll see. My previous one was a bit shy but this one seems even more so. I was shy in observation not just the box.

If you want to part with that mushroom rock in second pic on the sandbed by the glass. Let me know. Well, that is if you ship.

Let me look around and see if I have any shipping boxes saved. Probably wouldn't even have to be overnight. Those things are hard to kill. I've had them bounce back after almost a year in a dark brute with no heat. I'll let you know.

I'd appreciate that sir. If you use Pirate Ship for overnight, it is quite reasonable. You are only 3 hours away from me, may be cheaper to drive down and pick it up! As a bonus, I get to check out your tanks and talk reef stuff.

Dm your shipping address if you would so I can calculate cost. Even if I don't have a box here I can pick something up next time I'm at one of my LFS. I'll look around and see if I have any other stuff you might be interested in and maybe I can put together a nice gift pack 😉 Will probably be a few days as I'm trying to enjoy the spring thaw.

Was boiling sap yesterday.

All this

Beautiful color, it'll be darker as the weather warms. Early season is always the best
Ya I don't think I boiled it long enough which makes it a little lighter. I don't bother with a refractometer and just go by temp. Of course if I'm not paying attention it takes about 30 seconds to ruin 8 hours worth of boiling 🤣 Glad I'm doing small batches.

It does burn quite quick if you aren't paying attention
