if so how bad really is HLLE? he eats well, sheet of nori a day alongside pellets with the occasional brine shrimp.

Yes if you could do white light that would be great - if you're talking about the area in the second photo that is in front of the eye and slightly above, it does look a bit like HLLE, however, the blue light can be deceiving. Are you feeding properly, and avoiding poor quality carbon?
