so normally I just swap out the RS valve for a classic good 'ol gate valve.
But I have heard the new ones got updated and are pretty good??

so wondering if i should give it a go? I do like the good gate valve for the tune ability....

but on the other hand I sure can save some time and money just going with what I got. always can cut the pipe and add the gate later if I dont like it.

thoughts?

I'd just keep the red one if it came with your new system. From what i understand they're quite a bit better than the (older) black ones.
I have now had both RS versions on my 300XL (because I cracked the original drain installing. Reefmat). Red one “feels” better and less flimsy, but TBH, I didn’t have a problem with either version.

So the red one is a direct replacement for the black one? Might be nice to have a spare on hand to swap out when the one installed needs cleaned.

Great question. I just told RS that I needed the entire main drain assembly because I cracked it. The one they sent had the new red valve…
