Just got my hands on a Tideline 31g Lagoon. Looking to make this a low maintenance, mostly automated and streamlined build. Planning on doing an SPS-forward mixed reef. Already got a few things for it:
  • Apex A2 + MXM module
    • I got a crazy deal on one BNIB and specifically wanted the salinity probe integration
  • BubbleMagnus MiniQ skimmer
  • Sicce 1.5 return pump
  • Aquatop heater
  • Hygger mini wavemaker
  • I designed and 3D printed the [pictured] 3-tier media basket with slide-out trays
    • Currently made out of PLA as it was a proof of concept, final print will be black and PETG
  • ~40lbs of dry rock
  • 30lbs of CaribSea Reef Sand
  • Bio-media for the center section of rear chamber (will be a refugium)
  • TurboStart 900
Things I still need to gather:
  • Lighting to accommodate an SPS-heavy mixed reef
  • Apex FMM to make custom ATO setup
  • Dosing setup
  • Refugium lighting
  • Many other odds and ends
I will likely put off purchasing lighting and some of the down-the-road items until the cycle is over. Should be a fun build!

Prepping to fill the tank, currently mixing saltwater and buttoning up the equipment routing before throwing sand and rock in. Will be running the G6 XR30 for the build to support an SPS dominated mixed reef, although overkill for this size tank, but at least it’s a future-proof purchase (and I got it for a steal!). I made my console board last night and also reinforced the inside of the stand to support the weight of the equipment. Still a lot of room to add more devices like dosing pumps and other controllers. Also designed and 3D printed a few more parts for the tank like the pictured Neptune probe holder so I could cluster them together. The auto feeder is an eye sore but I’ll see if I can creatively mount it in a better way.

The tank is coming along nicely. Last weekend on 4/4 I set up the tank and got all of the electronics mostly in order. Used Fritz TurboStart 900 and QuikCycl ammonia solution on 4/5 for a fish-less cycle, and to my surprise I had zero Ammonia/Nitrite and measurable Nitrate on 4/8. I have never seen a cycle this fast. I was skeptical, so I added more QuikCycl that day and on 4/10 I again had 0 Ammonia/Nitrite and measurable Nitrate. On 4/11 I went out and picked up a pair of Picasso clowns and an RBTA, along with some chaeto for the refugium. The chaeto came crawling with pods which I love because I will eventually put a dragonette in the tank.

I’ve got a TopLids polycarbonate lid on the way, should be here in a couple weeks as they just started production for mine. Will slowly add hardy corals once I set a baseline for my water parameters. My pH is low right now reading at ~7 so I will be using Kalkwasser to raise it and to manage Ca/dKH/Mg moving forward unless I find it too erratic to control without other methods. My salinity probe was reading about 1ppt lower than my Hanna tester, come to find out I had bubbles trapped inside the probe throwing my numbers. These need to be a better design, like making the elements a U shape.

3D printer has been running nonstop for this tank. I made the clip-on tray for the hygger refugium light, redesigned holders for the Neptune probes and redundant float switch, and currently making a switch mount for the controller board. Stand organization will happen at some point, but for now it works.

Will go out and get a small cleanup crew today as a starter set and scale over time. Still haven’t figured out how to integrate the eyesore that is the AFS.

Well done, looks like you’re off to the races!

Update on the tank. Unfortunately my RBTA hid itself under the rock work for the past week and then found itself in the powerhead 2 nights ago, so that sucks. On the bright side I got my water params in order and added the kalkwasser in my ATO in a low dosage, so I will monitor levels over time. I also added a few SPS frags up high and some GSP down low. Overall great polyp extension so far. Waiting for my poly lid to deliver and will continue adding corals over time. Will wait for my copepod population to increase before adding a dragonet, but I may also seed the tank to expedite that.
