Hello. I probably should start off by saying i'm a reefkeeper who maybe shouldnt be trying to keep sps because i kill so many of them. But i'm stubborn and want to someday see my tank sps dominated. With that said, my sps colonies and even some frags often get tissue necrosis (i belive that's what it is) starting from the bottom of the coral. I dont believe its RTS because it happens at a slow rate and i've experienced RTS, where if i hadnt fragged the coral it would have turned white quickly.

What could be the problem, other than the reefkeeper?

Lacking SPS theory (Stability Promotes Sucess ) . What are the water parameters and lighting ..What size tank ?? What happens if you cut and glue a frag does it stop ? Is flow direct or indirect ? How much flow ?

Sounds to me like Alk swings. Whenever I see white spots starting at the base of SPS it is typically my Alk is too high.

I had the same issues and this is what i learned

ALK and MAG are very very important in keeping thriving sps,and stability is what makes them really happy

Like was said already, Stability is key. Even if your parameters are good at the moment you have figure out what it takes to keep them there, it sound like they are fluctuating. Post your parameters and some details on your system.

Yes stability is the biggest key in keeping SPS corals. And it doesn't take long for things to get out of whack!
So get yourself good/reliable test kits and stay on top of your parameters.

I would say it's your alk IMHO... Try topping off with kalk it should hold the tank alot more stable and make things a lot eaisier for you in keeping sps.... Topping off with kalk will normally cure most swings and promote great results from my exp...;)
