Won't the 'ugly phase' provide some algae for the fish? That's the whole reason I think to get a herbivore fish as the first fish.
The ugly phase doesn’t usually start with algae. It’s usually bacterial film, diatoms, cyano occasionally Dino and other slime looking things. Yes gha and the other green algae are part of the uglies but it can take a while.

We have one, never gives any other fish even later additions any issues, always kissing the rocks and glass working hard for us, does take much interest in nori though
