Trickle Filter/Bio Balls Today ?

Since technology has driven us toward other means of biological filtration like live rock, live sand, bio-pellets etc, is there still reasons to use the old trickle wet/dry filter and a media like bio-balls ?

Today, even people with a fish only system's use live rock, sand, and pellets for filtration.

So, is there still uses for these old aging systems ?

Do you still combine live rock with trickle filters for your reef or fish only tanks ?

What about others saying that you do not, because their a nitrate factory, that's why people don't use them any longer ?

Well we learned that there is no need if one has live rock in the tank. As the bacteria will only populate the live rock as it is closest to the food source fish waste.

They would be ok to use for a fish only without live rock.
