Can I trim the skeletal base of an acan frag horizontally?

How much skeleton is needed below the polyps?

I want to make the overall height of the frags 1/2", or polyps and 1/4" of base. I tried searching this but got no definitive results.

I got some new acan frags. I let them sit for a week in a frag rack just to acclimate. They open fully shortly after lights on and appear really content in he tank. I would like to mount them to my rock work next week. With other corals I just remove the plugs but the stems are 3/4"-1" thick which will cause the polyps to grow down the stem before growing out.

I would like to encourage horizontal encrusting so my thought was to shorten the distance between the polyp and the rock. This would also look nicer from the beginning.

I would like to trim the one on the left to look similar to the one on the right. My goal is to promote lateral growth onto rock once I mount them.
