So I just received my Tropic Marin hydrometer, its way bigger than I thought lol. What's the best way to use it? What sort of container are you using to float it in? Do I just float it in my water mixing trashcan to check salinity? Any tips would be appreciated.

Am I doing something wrong? Or is the salinity low?

Is it floating or resting on the bottom? It has to be able to float and adjust due to the salinity. A couple of fellow members posted a link to a cylinder that most of us use with these. I'm not sure what you are using.

So to your question:

A - salinity could be off
B - the hydrometer doesn't have enough room to operate properly

Not a great reference but one never the less - it floats.

It is floating, how do you guys calculate the salt amount per gallon of water I'm using red sea salt (blue bucket)

I just purchased this one for my hydrometer.

Amazon product ASIN B00LV3ZFZ0
I wanted glass to see the numbers better but if you fill this to the 500 mL mark and drop the hydrometer in it fills it right up to the brim and you can see it above the plastic. I like it because it can't break and shouldn't break my hydrometer but glass might have been nice too.

How much salt you use per gallon of water to get 35 ppt salinity
Roughly 950g per 25L gives you 35ppt salinity. You would have to do your american measure translations here, as I am not that familiar with gallons, cups and horse steps.

Use this for two years now

EISCO Plastic Graduated Cylinder, 500mL - Class B - Stable Hexagonal Base - Premium Polypropylene - Lab Cylinder, Measuring Cylinder

Amazon ASIN number B00LV3ZFZ0

I fill to around 475mL, put in the hydrometer, then fill more so it sits flush with the top. Super easy to read since level with top

I would not put in tank or glass, too much risk

I do not use red sea salt but the salt I do use, Tropic Marin Pro Reef, has instructions. Are there any on the bucket you have? Should have recommended temp, salinity, and the ratio they use per 5 gallon mixing.

If it's that high you have way too much salt. I use that salt and its ~1/2 cup per 1 gallon of water for 35ppt. I fine tune it little here and there but that will get you super close

I think its a half cup per gallon but,I make 50 gallons at a time. Here's how I do it. I buy the 200 gallon box of Reef Chrystals. They come in 4 separate bags in the box. I dump about a 1/4 of 1 bag at a time in to make sure it dissolves completely. It usually takes just the one bag but every once and a while I'll have to add a little bit more.

I turn all the pumps off and float it in my tank/mixing bucket as well. Love how easy it is and no dipping and filling containers or remembering to turn my ato on or off
