it jst growing im scared it a leather of some sort and my space invader is awfully close i herd they do chemical warefare
 
I would just leave them. Sponge comes and goes. Might stay. Looks pretty ect. Won't have any effect on parameters or nutrients. Ect.
Yes it's probably eating up or soaking up excess. Silicate. Something.
A beneficiary imo.
