UV question

I have a 50 watt Pentair HO UV that I purchased used for my tank upgrade. However, I have a random dino outbreak in my 40 gallon temporary/QT tank. I know this is WAY oversized for the 40 gallon, even the 100 gallon I ordered from Glasscages. But, my question is, can I run it temporarily to help get rid of the dinos? I know (assume may be a better word) the dinos are the free floating at night kind since I am running a 5 micron DIY filter on it and it's brown in the morning.

sure you can run it, other than potential excess heat I don't think there's any harm in oversized UV, especially for QT.

I only have experience with UV for my koi pond but know that I have to change out the bulb once a yr. You said it was used, so the bulb could be a bit weak if it ran over a yr or so. :thinking-face:

I purchased a new quart sleeve and bulb. I was just wondering if running that monster of a UV temporarily on my little 40 gallon would cause any issues.

Thank you, but... the caveat is, the temp tank also has livestock in it... Will that affect the inhabitants at all?

Unless the unit generates enough heat to raise the temperature outside of acceptable parameters, it should not affect them negatively, I was assuming you would not be running a UV on a tank with no livestock :)

Just watch the temp. If it starts to increase, stop the UV.

How long did it take to knock them out? I've been keeping them "manageable" by manual removal... however, the UV is just sitting there waiting for the new tank. So, my inner child is screaming... USE IT!!

Not really concerned about heat. My inkbird would send me a notification and I could shut the pump and UV off remotely or have my wife do it since she works from home.

Took mine out in less than two weeks.

There were two other variables at the time:

1). Small blackout period, was going for 3 days, but reduced to just 1.5 days.
2). My ATS started growing good, thick algae.

Still, the UV was clearly helping. Also noteworthy, I reduced flow lower than what the pentair docs said, around 2.5x sump->tank turnover.

Great idea on the 45 degree elbows and unions!! Going to change my setup.
