i should add that i have uswd this stuff as a last ditch to fix two different fish that were on deaths doorstep and it worked like magic. Maybe the medications i applied prior to using the glucan were the reason but the one fish wasnt responding to anything and i started this and about a week later he was all good.

Do you have a specific Beta Glucan product brand you'd recommend?

Congrats on getting the other fish to live. I stopped ordering from LA 6 months ago. I pretty much only ordered DD stuff and the short term success rate was never great. Its great that shipping is basically free and they refund dead stuff. And people keep using them for those reasons. But it doesn't sound like the most ethical of livestock sale models.

that is good news. what antibiotics have you dosed? I ask because i typically just do copper and prazi.

Also, i have been using beta glucan whenever i have a sick fish and have seen very good results. Not many people talk about it as it is not sold in fish stores but it is a much morr effective immunity booster than garlic or selcon IMO.

Hi Brian, The LA fish I ordered came in with infections. The butterfly fish was too far gone to help, but the other two fish are doing well. It was necessary to treat with antibiotics. I don't use them unless I need them. When I do need to treat with antibiotics, I use the trifecta combination recommended by @Humblefish and others here at R2R. I've had very good luck using this combination for 10 days. @Humble fish writes: "When battling a severe bacterial infection, combining Furan-2 + Kanaplex + metronidazole (ex. Seachem MetroPlex) can be both effective and safe." https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/antibiotics.283711/

The probiotics I use was also recommended by R2R members who have much more experience than me diagnosing and treating sick fish. Doctors Foster and Smith sell it at https://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=4726

I have never heard of beta glucan, so I googled, LOL. Webmd.com says "Beta glucans are sugars that are found in the cell walls of bacteria, fungi, yeasts, algae, lichens, and plants, such as oats and barley. They are sometimes used as medicine. Beta glucans are used for high cholesterol, diabetes, cancer, and HIV/AIDS" It says it can be used to boost the immune system, but at what dosage would one use for fish? (https://www.webmd.com/vitamins/ai/ingredientmono-1041/beta-glucans)

Do you have a site I can check out that lists studies or research using beta glucan on fish? I'd love to read more about it. :)

This might work for the Masstick I make. I like masstick for new fish because i can just stick it in the tank and they can pick at it on their terms

Care to share you recipe for Masstick? Sounds interesting.

Agreed. One must be ready to treat all fish ordered, but then, I think we need to be ready to act quickly no mater where we purchase a fish from because illness often rears its ugly head due to the stress of shipping.

It's a retail food product that you can buy: http://www.easyreefs.com/en/masstick_en.html

It comes in powder form and you mix with water to form a paste.

Sorry, Larry. I misunderstood your post. Sorry, been working long hours lately. I've been looking into New Era products and made a hasty, erroneous connection. I can't seem to find the New Era products here in the USA.

I wasn't happy with my LA (CA) order either. Ordered a medium Pakistani butterfly, medium latticed butterfly, a couple snails & some blue leg hermits. After unbagging I was shocked how tiny the butterflies were. The Pakistani was barely the smallest size listed under medium & had lymph on his fins, the latticed was definitely a small size & the hermits were so small i could barely see the crabs, basically a waste to add to a 180. I emailed them & they gave me 1/2 off the lattice & hermits & said the lymph will go away. The lymph did go away from the Pakistani after a month in QT, but had spread to the lattice, which never lost CV it and died after about 2.5 months in QT. The Pakistani was just too small for my tank & only lasted a couple weeks in my DT after eating great in QT for 1.5 months. Even some of the snails died. So really ended up with nothing. So, I'd be very sceptical to order from them again. My LFS offers no guarantee, why I tried LA, but at least I can see them in person to get what I want. Sad to see it's not just me.

Personally, I refuse to buy from any store that does not offer a guarantee so that rules out all LFS in my area.

I ordered from DD recently. Wrasse came in great shape and ate the first day. He played dead when he first got in which freaked me out. He been good but it’s only been a few days. I’ll report back after a couple of weeks.

I would just say order from DD. Most of the complaint I hav been seeing have been with either CA shipped fish or finicky fish ordered (angels, butterflies, Tangs, etc)
