I decided to cut back feeding my fish so much. I noticed after about 2 weeks that my Vlamingii Tang sand sifting . To me a huge benefit. Now I wonder how many other fish not designated as a sand sifter practice that . It would spit the coralline out , or it would come out its Gills

If it is sand sifting you should probably provide it more nori, especially if the rocks are bare of it.

I see my sail fin poop aragonite from time to time and that’s my queue to up my nori feedings. A fat healthy fish is better than one trying to scavenge for food.

If you are cutting feedings to help with water parameters it’s starving the fish at the sake of husbandry. A hungry fish will also become more aggressive, especially a tang.

Too late for the Aggression thing. I was overfeeding them all , it still killed 4 fish over territory. It is now the only fish in a 100 gallon . Point taken I will feed it more Nori through the day. I think it is sifting to get the flake food it doesn't get to when I feed ?

Im not sure if a tang should be on flakes. I feed pellets and frozen, along with nori.

He sounds hungry. Is he fat? And how big?

Time to rehome it to a larger tank ,if it's only 5-6" weighing 1/2 lb, stumpy stunted growth.
mingi's are know to go from 2"- 6/8" in first year, 2 yrs old 10-12" 2-5yrs old 14+" weighing avg 3+ lbs
100 gal,200 gal just not big enough for a mingi

Tank is too small and why it's aggressive I would say. I've kept two of them and they are probably one of the most passive fish in the tank out of 9 tangs. Mine is in 7ft 330g and I wish I could have gone larger. Mine can go from one end of the tank to the other in the blink of an eye. My first was in a 6ft 180g and it was too small and why I upgraded to the 330.

That puppy is going to get huge ( for an aquarium size fish).
I helped a buddy move one from his 8' x 2' tank to a 10' x 3' x 3' tank a few years ago.
Used a salmon net and a 150 gallon tote to catch and move it.
It was all of 20" long.

I hugely agree with others that a 100 gallon tank isn't close to big enough for a Vlamingii and it needs to be rehomed immediately. Years ago, I had one in an 8 foot 375 gallon tank and it was absolutely cramped and I had to rehome it to someone with a larger tank (I made the same mistake with a batfish and had to rehome it to a public aquarium). I currently have a 7 foot 327 gallon tank and would never consider a Vlamingii for it. Not trying to pile on here or pick on you, but I'm not sure what the question is, so as with others I can only give my experience that this is really not a viable situation (and that flake food only is likely not going to provide enough nutrition for a fish of this size and energy level).

Point taken . I did ask the LFS owner that question , He obviously gave me the wrong advice. The problem is how would I go about improving the situation. Pretty much impossible

unfortunately if not planning a major upgrade in near future just rehome it is the best option

I have two active Aquariums now origional 40 , the 100 , and a 75 ready to put together . So no upgrade possible . To rehome i think would be hard to do for me . I doubt the LFS would be of any help . I will certainly try as I want more fish

I was trying to understand if this was a serious post or not. I'm still not sure. Putting aside the animal and display size the question I had is why did you reduce feeding? Was there a problem you are trying to solve or something else driving it?

I understand the "nutrient" concern but we also have to take into account the affect hunger has on animals. You could always feed multiple small portions rather than once or twice. There is a possibility of destruction happening due to a hungry fish. And by destruction I mean nipping at corals, aggression around feeding time to get more, etc.

I know it is not the same for everyone by having some aggressive feeders myself I break up the total food I want to add and feed it over 5 sessions a day. I also do a healthy frozen at night. Nori sheets twice a week. Seems to work for me. Adjusted over time due to fish growth or population changes.

To clarify, you have one of these below in your 100 gallon tank? With rock, equipment, corals, other fish? And do not think you can re-home it or that it is not a good idea?

Yes that is the fish. I obviously should not have trusted the LFS owner which disappoints me. No other fish. Due to my location rehoming ie transportation would be touchy. I would give it away if someone wanted it. I stopped feeding so much for water quality . I never thought of it sifting to be a negative sign , as There are other fish that do that as a normal course of feeding. As stated it killed other fish. I would love to rehome it , and start over with smarter choices of stocking

Context is everything which is why I asked. I had this fish that I was calling a Starry Goby. That is what I purchased anyway. Elsewhere I posted a video of it when Biota reached out to me and said that was not the fish but rather an Upside Down Goby :)

I was calling it the wrong thing for months until I was corrected. I just wanted to be sure that wasn't the case here. Not to cause concern or judge.

Hope your day is well.

A LFS worth its weight in salt (pun intended) should take back a fish that it sold you if it's not working out. Even if they don't give you a refund or store credit, they should take it. At least that was my experience when I lived near a LFS (I don't now--everything I get has to be via online vendor or from another local aquarist...or drive 100 miles to a not-so-local store). They should be incentivized to at least give you store credit (even if only partial) because they want repeat business. In any case, that would be my first attempt if I were in your shoes: Talk to the LFS and ask them to take it back. Again, even if they give you nothing in return (which would indicate maybe stop patronizing them), at least you solve what is an untenable situation as there isn't a scenario where that fish thrives in that small of a tank--it may even not survive as it grows as it may start thrashing into rocks as it gets more cramped (that was why I had to rehome my batfish years ago--it was beating the crap out of itself by panicking and smashing into rocks--and that was in an 8 foot 375 gallon tank).

It is 4 years old in my tank just rehoming is enough for me. I will definitely try thanks
