Over the past several months, I’ve been watching my Ultra Gold wall hammer slowly die. I think that it has stabilized as it hasn’t lost anymore tissue in the past month. So now what? Can I cut the dead skeleton off? If I do, would that promote new growth? Will it continue its slow demise? Could it recover and regrow on the exposed skeleton? Does anyone have any experience here? Here are a couple photos to show. The skeleton is about 3-1/2” end to end.
I also cannot explain why it used to be gold but is now more green-ish.
Unfortunately wall hammers are notorious for being hard to keep long term. Our record is just over a year. I would not cut the skeleton. You can try an iodine dip but IME once they start to go there is not much you can do. I've never seen a gold hammer turn green but I would suspect its could be related to spectrum/intensity of lighting.
